Pietro Bordino (born November 22, 1887 in Turin , † April 15, 1928 in Alessandria ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

Pietro Bordino came into contact with motorsport at an early age. His father worked for Fiat and the young Pietro got in touch with Vincenzo Lancia , who was a works driver for Fiat. In 1902, at the age of fifteen, Bordino became the driving mechanic. In this capacity, he finished second at the Vanderbilt Cup with Lancia in 1906 .

In 1908 Bordino began his career as a driver. He made his debut in a hill climb and entered Grand Prix racing in 1911. He became a works driver at Fiat and in 1913 switched to Vincenzo Lancia, who had meanwhile founded his own automobile company. In 1913 he finished eighth in the Targa Florio . The First World War interrupted the racing activities of Bordino, who continued his career as a motorcycle racer after the end of the war in 1919 . In 1921 he returned to monopostosport as a works driver for Fiat . With the Fiat 801 he contested the Targa Florio, but failed. He competed in races for the Italian factory team all summer in the United States and only returned to Europe for the Italian Grand Prix . In the race he was in the lead for a long time in a Fiat 802 , but retired on lap 16 with a damage to the magneto.

In 1922 he celebrated his greatest success in motorsport when he won his first Grand Prix race with his triumph at the Italian Grand Prix.

Bordino was, alongside Felice Nazzaro and Antonio Ascari, the most famous Italian racing driver of the 1920s. He led many races, but was only able to finish a few because of his material-killing driving style. After Fiat withdrew from international Grand Prix racing , he bought a Bugatti T35 and continued to compete in car races. In 1928 he had a fatal accident while training for the V Circuto di Alessandria , a street race in downtown Alessandria . When trying to avoid a dog running across the street, he lost his way, the Bugatti overturned and fell into a river. Bordino found death in the process.
