- 1 January Numa Droz becomes President of the Swiss Confederation for this year .
- January 14: The German Reichstag is dissolved after a proposal by Otto von Bismarck 's government to increase the army by about 10 percent and to extend the army law by another seven years was rejected. The so-called “cartel parties” win in the following Reichstag elections .
- February 12: The Mediterranean Entente is the result of an agreement between Great Britain and Italy mediated by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck . The contracting parties want to preserve the status quo in the Mediterranean .
- April 30: Chancellor Otto von Bismarck decrees that customs officer Wilhelm Schnäbele be released. The Frenchman was arrested at a staff meeting on German soil for alleged espionage. The diplomatic crisis that arose during the Schnäbele affair is thus resolved.
- May 23: Pope Leo XIII. ends the Kulturkampf with the German Empire . Among other things, the Church accepts civil marriage , state school supervision, and the ban on priests from politics.
- June 18: The Reinsurance Treaty , a three-year, secret neutrality agreement between the German Empire and Russia , is signed by Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and Russian Foreign Minister Nikolai Giers .

- May 3: The Nanaimo , British Columbia , Canada mine disaster kills 150 miners, only seven survive.
- November 11: In Chicago , Albert Parsons , August Spies , George Engel , and Adolph Fischer are hanged for the Haymarket Riot . There was no evidence linking the accused anarchists to the bombing. International protests against the verdict remain ineffective.
- November 13: More than 20,000 Chicago workers follow the funeral procession for the four participants in a strike that a court blamed for the Haymarket Riot , who were executed two days ago .

- October: By French decrees, the Indochinese Union is formed from the French protectorates of Tonkin , Annam , Cochinchina and Cambodia .

The Merchandising Marks Act
- August 23: In the Merchandising Marks Act passed by parliament, Great Britain will in future require the indication of the country of origin on all imported industrial products. The term " Made in Germany " is born. German products were stamped with this stamp in Britain to represent them as inferior. - March 4: When George Hearst takes office as Senator, he hands over management of his newspaper , The Daily Examiner , to his son, William Randolph Hearst , who renames it the San Francisco Examiner . This is how the gradual construction of a newspaper empire begins.
- March 8: The Wicküler brewery in Elberfeld is converted into a stock corporation. On June 2, it starts producing Pilsner beer .
- March 22: The first edition of the daily newspaper El Espectador appears in Colombia , which is now the oldest newspaper in the country.
