A bungalow (English / Anglo-Indian bungalow from Gujarati : બંગલો , baṅglo or Hindi : बंगला baṅglā ; to baṅgālī = Bengali, [house] from Bengal ) is a mostly single-storey house that can have different roof shapes . The term is often used in connection with holiday homes and summer homes.

History of the bungalow

The word comes from the North Indian languages and literally means “Bengali”, ie a house in the Bengali style. The name comes from the fact that in the geographical region of Bengal in north-east South Asia in the 18th century, the British colonists used the construction of local huts as a model took to build houses in a similar way, for example for rural stays. The traditional Bengali village houses are single-story and have a wide veranda over the entire entrance front.

In Germany, bungalows experienced their greatest heyday as a form of living in the 1960s. Starting in the USA, where wooden frame bungalows have always been one of the most widespread house shapes, luxuriously furnished bungalows have often become a popular house shape, also as angled bungalow with flat or hipped roof . An example of this is the chancellor's bungalow in Bonn designed by the architect Sep Ruf in 1963 , which was available to the chancellors from 1964 to 1999 as an apartment and for state receptions in private surroundings and has been a listed building since 2001 .
