El Espectador ( German  The Viewer ) is a Colombian national daily newspaper that was founded on March 22, 1887 in Medellín by Fidel Cano Gutiérrez. It represents liberalism and is the oldest and most traditional newspaper in Colombia and has had its headquarters in Bogotá since 1915 . The owner is Grupo Valorem .

In the course of its early history, El Espectador mostly took a critical stance on the ruling class and was forcibly closed several times by the censorship . Later it was the drug trafficking mafia, above all Pablo Escobar , who wanted to silence the critical paper. On December 17, 1986, the then director of El Espectador , Guillermo Cano Isaza, was shot by hired contract killers in front of the newspaper building. The newspaper had recently published a number of critical articles about the Colombian drug barons. On September 2, 1989, a bomb exploded in front of the editorial office foyer and tore half the building away. The client was again the Medellín cartel .

In 2001 the newspaper had to be changed to a weekly publication due to a financial crisis. Since May 11, 2008, El Espectador has been published daily again, now in tabloid format. Between 2010 and 2019 the newspaper lost 34.02% of its audience ( audiencia ).

El Espectador is now the second largest daily newspaper in Colombia after El Tiempo, with a weekday circulation of around 18,000 and a weekend circulation of 42,000. El Espectador was the first communication medium in Colombia to commercialize its content through the implementation of digital subscriptions.

Since 1960 the newspaper has organized the election for Colombia's Sportsman of the Year every year .

The Nobel Prize for Literature, Gabriel García Márquez, worked at El Espectador from 1954 to 1955 .
