history

Editing of El Tiempo in Bogotá

The newspaper El Tiempo was founded on January 30, 1911 by Alfonso Villegas Restrepo and sold in 1913 to Eduardo Santos Montejo , who ran it as owner and director until 1976 . Up to the 130th edition the newspaper was printed in tabloid format and only then changed to the standardized daily newspaper size. On September 6, 1952 , the headquarters of the publishing house burned down completely. With the help of the newspaper El Liberal , however, the paper continued to be printed without exception. It was not until 1978 that the editorial team moved to Avenida Eldorado , where it is still available today.

From 1913 to 2007 the majority of El Tiempo belonged to the extremely wealthy Santos family, whose members held leading positions in Colombian politics. For example, Eduardo Santos Montejo (President from 1938 to 1942) and Francisco Santos Calderón (Vice President from 2002 to 2010) and most recently the former President Juan Manuel Santos , who was in office from 2010 to 2018. In 2007, Spain's Grupo Planeta bought 55% of the Casa Editorial El Tiempo media group, including the newspaper and its associated TV channel CityTv Bogotá.

Distribution and selling price

El Tiempo is published with six different regional parts:

The retail price is 1700 COP for the weekday and 3500 COP for the Sunday edition.
