Manizales is a municipality ( municipio ) in central Colombia and the capital of the department of Caldas . The city is located in the main coffee-growing area within sight of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano .
geography
Manizales is located in the south of Caldas in the sub-region Centrosur and lies in the central cordillera of the Andes . Neira borders the municipality in the north , Marulanda and Herveo in Tolima in the east, Villamaría in the south and Chinchiná , Palestina and Anserma in the west .
Manizales is the capital of one of the smallest Colombian departments. The city has an "abrupt topography" with many ridges and steep slopes which, coupled with the area's seismic instability, have required architectural adjustments and public works to make the city safer. Although Manizales has these topographical difficulties, there are fertile soils and many coffee plantations around it. The city is located in the northern part of the Colombian coffee-growing region ("Eje Cafetero"), near the Nevado del Ruiz volcano , which is 5,321 meters (17,457.3 ft) high.

The municipality of Manizales has 401,398 inhabitants, of which 373,815 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Quimbaya settled there in pre-Columbian times . Manizales was founded in 1849 by 20 Antioquians and was rebuilt as a modern city after a devastating fire in 1925, including the Cathedral of Manizales .
On April 11, 1900, the Roman Catholic diocese of Manizales was founded. On May 10, 1954, it was raised to the Archdiocese of Manizales .
economy
The city's economic focus is on coffee, cocoa and gold , as well as the textile, match, shoe, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.
Education and culture
There are several universities in Manizales, including the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and, since 1943, the State University of Caldas. A theater festival has been held in Manizales every year since 1968. In addition to the gold museum, there are also numerous university museums, including B. the Archaeological Museum, Geological Museum or the Art Museum with works by David Manzur .
