Elkin Soto Jaramillo (born August 4, 1980 in Manizales ) is a former Colombian football player . The midfielder with a strong left foot played for the Colombian national team and from 2007 to 2016 for 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

Career

In the club

Soto moved to the 1999 season from Atlético Nacional from Medellín to the club Once Caldas , where he was a regular player in the second year and apart from the seasons 2003 and 2004 missed only a few games. With Once Caldas he won the Copa Libertadores in 2004 . In the following World Cup final, he and his club lost to FC Porto on penalties. For the 2006 season, the midfielder was loaned to the Ecuadorian club Barcelona Sporting Club .

Soto's move to Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 was accompanied by weeks of transfer disputes. It was not until February 2007 that FIFA decided that the contract submitted by Once Caldas and supposedly valid until January 2008 was not effective. In July 2008, the transfer disputes were ended by the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) and Soto was sentenced to a four-month ban and a fine of 150,000 euros. However, since FIFA and CAS counted the period from December 2006 to January 2007 for the ban, Soto was only banned until September 14, 2007.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 second division season, Soto suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament and fell out of the first half of the season. In the Bundesliga home game against Hamburger SV on May 3, 2015, he was injured in the 33rd minute after a duel with Rafael van der Vaart , who accidentally hit Soto's left knee while blocking a shot attempt. The anterior cruciate ligament , the inner ligament and the meniscus were torn from the joint capsule . The club then extended the end of the season contract with Soto, who had actually wanted to return to Colombia, by one year until June 30, 2016. On April 20, 2016, he took part in team training for the first time after his injury. He made his comeback on the field on the last day of the season on May 14, 2016 in the game against Hertha BSC , when he came on for Jhon Córdoba in added time.

In early July 2016 he returned to Once Caldas. On July 16, 2016, he came on as a substitute on the fourth match day of the Colombian first division against Rionegro Águilas in the second half, making his comeback for the club after ten years. His contract ran until mid-June 2019. He then ended his career as a professional footballer.

National team

Soto played 26 times for the Colombian national soccer team from 2004 to 2013 , scoring six goals.
