Atlético Nacional (completely: Club Atlético Nacional SA ) is a football club from Medellín , Colombia's second largest city, founded in 1947 . The winner of the Copa Libertadores in 1989 and 2016 is one of the most important clubs in the country.

Nacional's local rival is Independiente Medellín , against whom the Clásico Paisa will be played. The fans see America and Deportivo Cali from Cali as well as the Millonarios from the capital Bogotá as their “favorite opponents”.

history

Atlético Nacional won the Colombian football championship for the first time in 1954. Another 14 championships followed between 1973 and 2015. Since 2005 in particular, Nacional has become the dominant club in Colombian football. Between 2013 and 2014 the club was able to win the championship three times in a row and after the 2015 title is the sole Colombian record champion with a total of 16 championship titles.

In 1989 Nacional won the Copa Libertadores, with the penalty shoot-out deciding in the finals against Club Olimpia from Paraguay . Other international successes include victories in 1989 and 1991 in the Copa Interamericana, which was held irregularly from 1968 to 1998, and two victories in 1998 and 2000 in the Copa Merconorte, which was held four times during that period . In 2016 Atlético Nacional won the Copa Libertadores title for the second time. In the final, the club won against Independiente del Valle from Ecuador .

Stadion

Atlético Nacional shares the Estadio Atanasio Girardot with its local rival Deportivo Independiente. The 52,872-seat stadium was inaugurated in 1953 and is part of the extensive Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot sports complex . It was also the venue for the Copa América 2001 and the venue for the 2011 Junior World Cup .

It is named after a hero of the Colombian War of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century.

Response to the crash of LaMia flight 2933

After 71 people died in a plane crash on November 28, 2016 , including 22 players from the Brazilian football club and first division club Chapecoense on their way to the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional, this game was played by the South American football association CONMEBOL on November 29 called off. The first leg was originally scheduled for November 30, 2016 at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot, Medellín, and the second leg for December 7, 2016 at the Arena Condá , Chapecó . The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez , spoke of a tragedy of enormous proportions.

Immediately after the accident, Atlético Nacional announced that they would forego the title and instead demanded that Chapecoense be named title holder of the Copa Sudamericana. On December 2, 2016, the South American Football Association Conmebol declared the club the winner of the Copa Sudamericana 2016 . In connection with the award of the title, the distribution of the bonus was also announced. Two million USD will be distributed to Chapecoense as the title holder. Atlético Nacional was awarded one million US dollars as a fair play award.
