Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga (born March 13, 1967 in Medellín , † July 2, 1994 ibid) was a Colombian football player .

Life

Escobar was born on March 13, 1967 in Medellín as the son of the banker Dario Escobar († 2013), who founded an organization for young people. He attended the Colegio Calasanz and graduated from the Instituto Conrado Gonzalez . He played on several school soccer teams before turning pro. His brother Santiago was also a soccer player and is now a coach .

Escobar played in the position of a defender and participated as such with the Colombian national team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 1994 World Cup in the USA . In the preliminary round match against the USA team on June 22, 1994, he scored an own goal to make it 0-1; Colombia eventually lost 2-1 and was eliminated from the tournament. A few days later, on July 2, 1994, Escobar was shot six times in front of a bar in Medellín.

The perpetrator Humberto Muñoz Castro was a bodyguard and driver of powerful drug lords. He may have acted as a disappointed, angry fan or a hitman for the Colombian gambling mafia. It is believed that Escobar's murder was due to his own goal. Muñoz Castro was sentenced to 43 years imprisonment in June 1995, but was released in 2005 after eleven years for good conduct.

Escobar's funeral was attended by around 120,000 people. Fans bring photos of him to games every year. In July 2002 the city of Medellín erected a memorial to him.

The Street Football World Cup was named Escobar in honor of Copa Andrés Escobar .
