The first street soccer world championship 2006 (officially streetfootballworld festival 06 ) took place from July 2nd to 8th, 2006 in Germany, at Mariannenplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The sponsorship of the project, which was funded by the German government and presented on May 28, 2005, was the then national soccer coach Jürgen Klinsmann, founder of the youth soccer foundation.

background

The 2006 Street Football World Cup was an official part of the arts and culture program of the 2006 FIFA World Cup . The organizer was streetfootballworld , a worldwide network for street football. At that time, the network included around 80 projects that wanted to give young people a chance to integrate into society instead of being a lone wolf through street football and the values practiced there such as tolerance, fairness and team spirit. The network was funded in 2006 by the Federal Youth Ministry, among others .

A total of 22 teams from five continents competed. The players, young street footballers aged 16 to 21, played for the Copa Andrés Escobar , named after the Colombian footballer who was shot after his own goal at the 1994 World Cup .

The special thing about this tournament was that there were no fixed rules. In the preliminary and intermediate rounds, for example, the playing times were twelve minutes, and later 20 minutes. Furthermore, the rules were redefined between the two playing teams before each game. Since there were no referees, violations of the rules among the players were resolved themselves. It was important that the fair play principle was adhered to.

Parallel to the games, a culture festival with films and photo exhibitions on football culture in various countries was held on Mariannenplatz. On July 2nd, the film The Street and the Ball by Grimme Prize winner Ciro Cappellari had its world premiere there.
