MSNBC (Microsoft / National Broadcasting Company) is an American news broadcaster based in New York City . It went on the air on July 15, 1996 and was formed as a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft . NBC Universal has been the sole owner of the station since 2012. Phil Griffin has been the current president and therefore chiefly responsible for the station since 2008 . The broadcaster claims to be non-partisan, but observers assign it to the left spectrum and describe it as being close to the Democrats .

history

MSNBC's predecessor was America's Talking , which was founded on July 4, 1994 as an offshoot of CNBC's business broadcaster. The station's boss at the time was the future boss of CNBC and Fox News Channel , Roger Ailes . America's Talking's programming consisted largely of talk shows and advice shows . Due to the poor success of the station, NBC Universal decided to discontinue the station on July 15, 1996. MSNBC, a joint venture between NBC Universal and Microsoft , was broadcast on the same channel at the same time .

Since it started broadcasting, MSNBC has managed to become popular in the United States. The station tries to reach its viewers with unconventional, easily understandable news. MSNBC is America's third largest news broadcaster with over 20 offices in the US and ten other offices worldwide.

Under the name ZDF.MSNBC, the Second German Television ( ZDF ) maintained a far-reaching cooperation with MSNBC between 1997 and 2001 under the direction of Dirk Max Johns, from which, among other things, today's Internet offer for today's news broadcast emerged . ZDF.MSNBC thus produced one of the first pure news offers on the German-speaking Internet.

MSNBC countered political attacks by the Fox News Channel on the Obama administration , the Democratic Party and the liberal establishment with political talk shows from the left-wing liberal side. The station sees itself as a "place of action for progressives".
