Rachel Anne Maddow (born April 1, 1973 in Castro Valley , California ) is an American radio and television presenter and commentator.

Life

Maddow grew up in California . As a teenager, she attended Castro Valley High School. She then studied at the renowned Stanford University , where she obtained a degree in public policy in 1994. As a Rhodes scholarship holder , she went to Oxford in 1995 , where she began her graduate studies at Lincoln College , which she completed with a doctorate in 2001. Her doctoral thesis dealt with the topic of HIV / AIDS and Health Care Reform in British and American Prisons.

After graduating, Maddow won a competition on Holyoke , Massachusetts- based radio station WRNX, which aimed to attract new talent to presenters. As the winner of the competition, she got the job as co-host of the morning talk radio show The Dave in the Morning Show. For the broadcaster WRSI Maddow conducted the program Big Breakfast for two years . In March 2004, she left the station to join the newly founded radio network Air America .

Together with Chuck D and Lizz Winstead, Maddow hosted the Unfiltered program on Air America until it was discontinued in March 2005. Less than two weeks later, she received her own two-hour program, the Rachel Maddow Show, named after her . In March 2008, the broadcast format was temporarily extended to a duration of three hours before it returned to its old, two-hour form in September 2008. The show was broadcast from New York from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. local time .

In June 2005, Maddow began working as a guest commentator for the show Tucker (with Tucker Carlson ) on cable news channel MSNBC's programming . Soon after, she got a job as permanent political analyst for the Race for the White House show starring David Gregory . She was also hired as a commentator for various special programs that MSNBC aired to flank the 2007/2008 presidential campaign, and for the program Countdown with Keith Olbermann (with Keith Olbermann ), a mixture of reporting and personal commentary. In the course of 2008, Maddow took over the vacation replacement for Olbermann several times as the presenter of his show. This was her first assignment as a presenter on a prime-time show.

Due to the great popularity that Maddow was able to book as Olbermann's deputy, MSNBC announced on August 19, 2008 that it would be entrusting her to host her own evening personality show. This show, called The Rachel Maddow Show , first aired on September 8, 2008 on the 9pm East Coast time slot, replacing the old show for that slot, Verdict with Dan Abrams. The show shows several minute introductions on the background of a topic, with Maddow often going a long way into American history and presenting older film material before evaluating current material and taking a stand. Especially after US President Donald Trump took office, the number of viewers increased. In March 2018, her show was the most watched on cable TV for the first time, just ahead of Sean Hannity's show ( Fox News Channel ).

Maddow is politically committed to the Democratic Party , whose political program and leadership staff she strongly supported in her show in the 2008 and 2016 presidential election campaigns and recommended it as the better alternative to the Republicans for the future leadership of America.

Maddow lives with her partner Susan Mikula in Manhattan and Western Massachusetts. Out magazine included her in its 2009 list of the 100 gay men and women who would have invigorated America in the past year. She also received the prize for "Lesbian / Bi Woman of the Year". She has received multiple awards for her outstanding news programs; she was an Emmy Prize winner in 2011 and 2017 .
