Susan Mikula

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Susan Mikula (* 1958 in New Jersey ) is an American artist and photographer .

Life

Susan Mikula grew up in New Hampshire and now lives alternately in Western Massachusetts and New York City. She is in a relationship with presenter Rachel Maddow .

Mikula completed an apprenticeship as an accountant and worked in this profession for many years. Only a course on the subject of coloring at Hampshire College in Amherst prepared her structurally for her current work. She made the further development of her work self-taught . In 1998 she designed her first own exhibition.

Her works are named as abstract, but are not clearly defined. The blurring of their objects makes trivialities disappear and sharpens the view of the central object and its actual form. She has a collection of antiquated photographic equipment whose long-expired films aid her creative process. With an SX-70 Polaroid camera, she takes pictures that are given their own coloring (yellowish) by the film. She then scans the Polaroids.

She sees painters like Julian Schnabel, Joan Mitchell, and Cy Twombley as role models; Gerhardt Richter, Agnes Martin, Maggie Mailer, Charlie Hunter, TJ Walton, Ward Schumaker.
