AfterEllen and AfterElton are English-language websites founded by Sarah Warn that report on lesbian , gay and bisexual real and fictional people in the entertainment industry and in the media.

Content

It offers news about, reviews and analyzes of films, television programs, music, books and plays with gay, lesbian and bisexual characters ( LGB ). News about and interviews with LGB celebrities are also offered. There are ongoing columns and several blogs are included in the offer. There are also various vlogs on AfterEllen .

In contrast to some other similar sites, it does not deal with any topics that are not directly related to the lesbian-gay world. For example, there are no reviews of the last Madonna CD just because she is a gay icon, nor any reviews of Martha Stewart's books or programs ; and Johnny Depp would only be interviewed if he played a gay role.

history

AfterEllen.com ("after Ellen") was founded in April 2002 by Sarah Warn. The site was named after Ellen DeGeneres , whose media coming-out in 1997, which was also carried out by the sitcom character she embodied, is seen as a milestone in the US lesbian movement. In 2005 it became the largest lesbian website with around 400,000 unique visits and was still the founder's hobby.

In 2004, Sarah Warn and Lori Grant founded Erosion Media, LLC . In January 2005 they started the gay counterpart AfterElton.com ("after Elton") after frequent requests. It is named after Elton John , who in 1973 came out as bisexual "like every human being" and after his divorce in 1988 as "comfortable being" gay , which is regarded as one of the small milestones in the British gay movement. In June 2006 both sites were sold to Logo , which is part of the MTV network. At the same time, Logo took over the gay and lesbian news portal 365Gay.com and discontinued it in 2010.

In 2008 AfterEllen achieved 700,000 unique visits per month. In the same year she was listed in the British Observer under The world's 50 most powerful blogs for her size and her "disrespectful view of how the lesbian community is represented in the media."
