Martha Stewart (* 3. August 1941 as Martha Helen Kostyra in Jersey City , New Jersey ) is an American television host , TV chef , entrepreneur and author . She became known for her projects in areas such as cooking , housekeeping , gardening , etiquette and handicrafts, as well as craft activities . She is often referred to as "America's Best Housewife".

Youth and private life

Martha Stewart was born in Jersey City in 1941 as the daughter of Edward Kostyra (1911–1979) and Harriet Martha Ruszowska (1914–2007), who had emigrated from Poland because of the Second World War . She grew up in Nutley with four brothers and five sisters. After completing college, she received a partial scholarship from Barnard College in New York City , while she made a living by modeling. She got her bachelor's degree in art, European history and architectural history.

She appeared in various television commercials until she married a law student in 1965 and gave birth to a daughter on September 27, 1965. The couple divorced in 1990. After modeling, she began a career as a stock broker and worked in the profession until 1973 when Wall Street slipped into recession . She then wrote columns in newspapers about cooking, gardening, and home furniture.

Stewart rose to national prominence by appearing regularly on the Today Show (a home and leisure and breaking news program) on NBC . In 1987 she became company spokeswoman for the K-Mart retail chain and in 1997 published her first of nine exclusive product lines.

In the 1980s she was the editor of the Family Circle newspaper . In 1990 she started her own magazine, Martha Stewart Living, and in 1993 she started a series broadcast under the same name. She also brought out a collection under the name Martha Stewart Everyday Collection , hosted the program In Martha's Kitchen on the TV channel Food Network and the garden show In Martha 's Garden on Home and Gardening Television (HGTV).

In 1999 she founded her own company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange . As CEO , she owned 61 percent of the company and 94 percent of the voting rights . Stewart owns homes in Connecticut and the Hamptons .

Condemnation

In 2002 Stewart was first suspected of having sold several thousand shares in the pharmaceutical company ImClone Systems using insider knowledge . The following year, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged her and her former broker with multiple violations of the law. Stewart resigned as her company's CEO, and her shows on CBS and UPN were also suspended. In 2004 Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of house arrest for perjury over her share sales and for conspiracy and obstruction of justice. She was placed at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in Alderson , West Virginia . She was also fined $ 30,000 and was banned from the profession for two years. These processes were discussed in the 2005 television film Der Fall Martha S. (Original: Martha Behind Bars ).

In 2005, Stewart hosted a spin-off of the series The Apprentice entitled The Apprentice: Martha Stewart , in which she was looking for a high-ranking employee for her company. At the end of 2005 she acquired a quarter of the rights to the lyrics of the grunge band Nirvana from Courtney Love for 70 million pounds sterling (around 122 million euros) . Stewart is often the target of American late-night talk show hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel , Jay Leno , David Letterman and Conan O'Brien .

In 2012 she had a guest appearance as herself in an episode of the sitcom 2 Broke Girls . This was followed by other appearances in the movies Pixels and Bad Moms , where she also embodied herself.

Her name appeared in connection with the so-called  Paradise Papers , which expose tax avoidance tactics of the super-rich.
