Pixel is an American science fiction - film comedy from the year 2015 by Chris Columbus . The script was written by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling , based on the short film of the same name by Patrick Jean from 2010.

action

In 1982 the teenager Sam Brenner competed in the first World Arcade Championship with his friend Will Cooper . There they meet the child prodigy Ludlow Lamonsoff and the egocentric Eddie Plant, who also take part in the tournament. Brenner reaches the final, but loses against the nasty Plant in the game Donkey Kong . The NASA sends the recordings of all the games in a space capsule into space to get in touch with possible extraterrestrial life.

Years later, Brenner worked as a television technician and Cooper was President of the United States. On one of his assignments, Brenner meets the newly divorced Violet Van Patten. Suddenly, Guam is attacked by aliens, whereupon Cooper asks his friend Brenner into the White House. Even Lieutenant Colonel Van Patten arrives there, because it belongs to the crisis staff of the military. Brenner recognizes on a recording that the attack was modeled on the pattern of the old video game Galaga , but it is initially not believed.

On the drive home, Brenner meets Ludlow Lamonsoff again, who was hiding in his car. It turns out that the aliens interpreted the message at the time as an aggressive act, because Lamonsoff discovered their declaration of war on a VHS tape with which he had previously recorded a television series. The aliens declare that more attacks will follow, and whoever wins three victories first will be allowed to destroy the loser's homeworld.

There is a second attack by the aliens in which they break the Taj Mahal into cubes of light. Cooper appoints Brenner and Lamonsoff as civil advisers. Since the attackers are made of energy, the military cannot do anything with conventional weapons. Only the light cannons developed by Van Patten's team can destroy the beings. Together with Van Patten, they are preparing a group of elite soldiers for the next attack that is to take place in London by means of training on video slot machines . There the aliens attack with the game Centipede . Since the soldiers are not up to the task, Brenner and Lamonsoff take up their light weapons and destroy the attackers.

They realize they need the support of Plant, who is now in jail. After Cooper has agreed to respond to Plants numerous special requests, such as dinner with Serena Williams , he agrees to help. In their next game, they chase Pac-Man through the streets of New York in cars . You win the game through Plant, and as the second battle trophy sent by the aliens, Q * bert joins Brenner's team, who from now on will be at your side in an advisory capacity. Then the aliens find out that Plant has cheated by using cheat codes. They then kidnap Van Patten's son Matty and declare themselves victorious.

Eventually, the aliens launched the concentrated attack , sending an army of video game characters to Washington, DC . While Lamonsoff and Plant keep the attackers in check with their light cannons, Brenner, Cooper and Van Patten are teleported to the alien spaceship and are given one last chance by the aliens - they have to win a game of Donkey Kong as pawns. Brenner seems to succumb, but Matty tells him about Plant's cheating at the World Cup. Brenner, newly motivated as the rightful arcade world champion, hurls the hammer at Donkey Kong , who then disintegrates.

At a press conference, Cooper reported on a peace deal with the aliens. Plant apologizes to Cooper, Brenner and Van Patten become a couple, Plant meets with Serena Williams and Martha Stewart , Lamonsoff marries Lady Lisa , a video character from Lamonsoff's youth and his secret love into which Q * bert had turned. A year later, have Lamonsoff and Lady Lisa a playpen full Q * bert children.

Kino Kino , the film magazine of Bavarian television, was disappointed with Columbus' film. Florian Kummert judged: “For a film that deals with the nostalgic and anarchic fun of computer game classics, it is fatal if this fun is not felt in the slightest. Game Over. "

Trailerwatch.de had a similar headline: "All in all, Pixels could have been a cool 80s retro nerd movie - because unfortunately the cast around Adam Sandler in combination with the joke-riddled script does not make for the hoped-for popcorn cinema - or to put it more appropriately: GAME OVER! "

The film was nominated for a 2016 Golden Raspberry in six categories , including Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay.

Trivia

  • The film's logo actually shows voxels .
  • The winner of a dispute between humans and aliens receives a trophy as a reward. So after defeating the Centipedes, people get the dog from the video game Duck Hunt and after defeating Pac-Man Q * bert . In return, the aliens kidnap a soldier from Guam, an Indian and Matty after their three victories. These three take the position of the pawn Pauline in the final game, Donkey Kong .
  • Lady Lisa is the main character in Dojo Quest , which is not an 'original game' but was designed for the film.
  • Duck Hunt did not appear until 1984. A few other themed computer games were not made until a few years after 1982. Columbia Pictures did not value authentic information here.
  • Pac Man's power pills don't work for ten seconds, as claimed. Their duration varies depending on the level.
  • The 1982 championships show how Donkey Kong is defeated by collapsing his tower, but then greeted with GAME OVER. So the main character actually won the game and should go to the next level, but contrary to the rules of the game, the decision was made to use this as the GAME OVER scene.
