Denis Akiyama

Denis Akiyama (born May 28, 1952 in Toronto , Ontario ; † June 28, 2018 there ) was a Canadian actor and voice actor .

Life

Akiyama studied psychology at York University and worked as a child psychologist before he decided to study acting at George Brown College. In the mid-1980s he got his first episode roles on Canadian television. He also worked as a musician and played the trumpet for the new wave band Pukka Orchestra . He made his feature film debut in 1987 in the war film Captive Hearts at the side of Pat Morita and Michael Sarrazin . The following year he starred in David Cronenberg's horror film The Inseparable . He was also featured in Sidney Lumet's Beyond Innocence and Michael Apted's Extreme ... by all means . He gained fame among the cinema audience through his role of the Yakuza killer Shinji , the antagonist of Keanu Reeves in the science fiction film Networked - Johnny Mnemonic . In the comedy film Pixels , he portrayed the creator of Pac-Man , Tōru Iwatani , in a small but central part of the film .

Akiyama guest starred on numerous Canadian and US television series from the mid-1980s until his death, including Relic Hunter , Warehouse 13 , 12 Monkeys and Suits . In the popular Canadian family series Katts and Dog , he acted in 49 episodes as Officer Ron Nakamura . In addition to his work on camera Akiyama also worked as a voice actor for cartoons such as Little Bear , Delilah & Julius and Eddie afraid Horn , as well as for computer games like Rainbow Six: Vegas and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 .

Akiyama was married with two children. At the end of 2017 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer; he died of the consequences of the disease in June of the following year.
