Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (born June 28, 1932 in Isleton , † November 24, 2005 in Las Vegas ) was an American actor of Japanese descent.

One of Morita's best-known roles was that of Mister Miyagi in the feature film Karate Kid , for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 in the category "Best Supporting Actor" . TV viewers know him primarily as the leading actor and co-producer of the crime series Ohara . Pat Morita also made some guest appearances on the series M * A * S * H as a South Korean doctor with the rank of Captain of the Reserve .

Life

Pat Morita was born in Isleton . At the age of two he contracted tuberculosis , which is why he spent most of the next nine years of his life in various hospitals in Northern California and San Francisco . He had to wear a full body cast for a while and it was believed that he would never be able to walk again.

After his spine was supported in four places, he learned to walk again at the age of eleven. During the Second World War , his Japanese family was interned in a camp , where he was sent to his family directly from the hospital in Gila River , Arizona . During this time he met a Catholic priest, from whom he got his stage name "Pat".

After the war his family ran Ariake Chop Suey, a restaurant in Sacramento . During his youth, he entertained guests in the restaurant and was a moderator at groups and business lunches.

He died of kidney failure in his Las Vegas home on November 24, 2005 at the age of 73. He left behind his wife after 15 years of marriage, three children from previous marriages, four siblings and his then 92-year-old mother, who died in 2009.

He was cremated in Palm Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery in Las Vegas .

  • He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1985 for his role as Kesuke Miyagi in the film Karate Kid . He was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award.
  • An episode of the SpongeBob SquarePants television series entitled The King of Karate (2006) was dedicated to Pat Morita . Shortly before his death, he spoke the original version of the guest character Master Udon and wrote the episode as the author. The fight in the pagoda itself is a tribute to the unfinished film Game of Death of Bruce Lee .
  • Pat Morita also has a guest appearance in the music video Movies (2001) from the rock band Alien Ant Farm in a scene that is based on the movie Karate Kid . The last work before his death was a dubbing role ; he spoke the Chinese emperor in the English version of the video game Kingdom Hearts II .
  • Pat Morita appeared in the series A Terribly Nice Family in the episode A Dodge for Japan (season 10) as a Japanese businessman Mr. Shimokawa, who wanted to buy the Dodge Al Bundys under all circumstances, as a guest. In the series The Prince of Bel-Air he appeared in the episode Die Ehre des Mann (Season 5) as a martial arts trainer.

  • In the episode Karate Island of the television series SpongeBob SquarePants (season 4), he lent his voice to the character Udon.
  • The fifth episode of the Cobra Kai series was dedicated to Pat Morita.
