General

Isleton dates back to 1874 when Josiah Pool settled. He built a dam along the Sacramento River, after which the city took off. Isleton was flooded in 1878 and 1881. There were further floods in 1890, 1907, and 1972. As an independent municipality, the place was only founded in 1923. As agriculture developed in the surrounding area, three canning factories opened in Isleton. In 1875 the Chinese began to immigrate to Isleton and the peak of their population reached 1500 people. The city also had a Japantown east of Chinatown. Both are registered on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is known today for the Crawdad Festival , which has been taking place here since 1986. More than 100,000 people come to this event every year. This has earned the city the nickname "Crawdad Town USA".
