The city of Concord (former names: Drunken Indian and Todos Santos ) is located in the center of Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay Area in the US state of California .

The place is located between Suisun Bay , a branch of the San Francisco Bay, and Mount Diablo , a popular local recreation destination in the Bay Area.

The geographical coordinates are: 37.97 ° North, 122.00 ° West. The urban area has a size of 78.1 km². Concord is connected to the San Francisco area's excellent public transport system via BART .

North of the city on Suisun Bay is the Military Ocean Terminal Concord , an active military port of the United States Navy .

history

The city was founded in 1869 by Don Salvio Pacheko. For a long time Concord was rather insignificant, but developed more and more into a separate business location with now 125,880 inhabitants (as of 2013). Although population growth was 0.1 percent below the national average in California, it is still clearly positive.

During the Second World War , Port Chicago was the most important supply base for the Pacific War . On July 17, 1944, the Port Chicago disaster occurred while ammunition was being loaded there, killing 320 sailors and civilians. It was the worst US loss of life in World War II on its own soil. The site of the explosion is now designated as the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial .

From 1969 to the 1990s , the Concord Jazz Festival founded by Carl Jefferson took place in Concord . Like many other cultural events, it used what is now the Sleep Train Pavilion , which was built in 1975 by Frank Gehry .
