history

Before the white people settled California, the land belonged to the Seunen Indians. After 1797, the area was part of the San Jose Mission's grazing land . Jose Maria Amador later founded his ranch here.

The name comes from an Indian cowboy who kept sheep here for the mission. The "San" was added in order to bring the name into line with the Spanish names of other places in use at the time (many of the places in the area are called "San" because they were named after Christian saints ).

The first American settlers came to San Ramon in 1850. Leo and Mary Jane Norris acquired a piece of land from Amador. Other people, including William Lynch, James Dougherty and Major Samuel Russel, settled and bought land here. The names are still widely known today because the streets of San Ramon bear their names: Norris, Lynch, Harlan, McCamley, Crow, Bollinger, Meese, Glass and Wiedemann. Both Harlan's house (built 1858) and Wiedemann's (1865) are still in their original location.

Until the city got its definitive, current name in 1873 when the first official post office was opened, it changed a few times. So it was called Brevensville, Lynchwille and Limerick.

In 1864 Brown and Co. built a railway line from San Ramon to Oakland, and in 1891 the Southern Pacific Railroad reached San Ramon. Until 1909, San Ramon was the terminus of this railway line, which increased its importance as a traffic junction. Both railway lines no longer exist today, San Ramon is dominated by individual traffic. The Interstate 680 crosses the city from north to south since 1966th

In 1970 the city had 4084 inhabitants (and was still called "Village"), a total of 25,899 lived in the area. The incorporation as an independent city only took place in 1983. The construction of the Bishop Ranch Business Park had already started, which should bring the city a strong growth.

economy

As part of Silicon Valley, several large American companies have their California offices here, including the petroleum company Chevron Corporation , AT&T and UPS . The opening of the Bishop Ranch Business Park brought the city a significant increase in the number of jobs. The city administration expects a further 16,000 jobs in the city area over the next fifteen years.
