Pinole is an American city in Contra Costa County in the US state of California . It has about 18,300 inhabitants (as of 2010). The city is located at the geographic coordinates 38.01 ° north, 122.32 ° west. The urban area has a size of 34.4 km².
Naming
The name is derived from quill , the Aztec name for a type of flour.
Size and division
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of exactly 13.6 square miles, the equivalent of 35 km². Of this, 39.21% is land and 60.79% is water.
history
In 1823 Ignacio Martinez built a hacienda on the site of today's Pinola . Over time, a small settlement developed around the hacienda, which grew rapidly with the connection to the railway network in 1878. In 1903 Pinola was officially given city status.
