Richmond [ ˈrɪtʃmənd ] is a city in western Contra Costa County in the US state of California . It is located on the San Francisco Bay Area about 18 miles from San Francisco.

Richmond has a population of 103,701 as of April 1, 2010. The urban area has a size of about 136.2 km², but in addition there are the land and water areas, whereby the total size of Richmond amounts to about 272.3 km².

Richmond has a large port with a cargo turnover of around 26 million tons per year and is known for its shipbuilding industry, which gained in importance during World War II and increased the population from 23,000 to 99,000.

Today, the main employer is the US mineral oil company Chevron , which has its main refinery here with a storage capacity of 15 million barrels .

The American movie Coach Carter (2005) is set in Richmond. The film is about basketball coach Ken Carter ( Samuel L. Jackson ) who uses basketball to help students at the local high school have a future beyond gangs, drugs and prison. R'n'B singer Ashanti shines in another role. The film is based on a true story.
