Pacific islanders

Pacific islanders is a demographic term used e.g. It is used, for example, in the US or New Zealand to describe the ethnic origin of people who themselves - or their ancestors - came from one of the islands in the Pacific Ocean .

Use of the term in New Zealand

The majority of this population is from Polynesia . Others come from Micronesia or Melanesia . The term is mainly used to distinguish these people from the Māori , who are also Polynesians.
