Jerry Dodgion
Jerry Dawson Dodgion (born August 29, 1932 in Richmond / California ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , flute , also clarinet ).
Live and act
Dodgion gained his first musical experience in the early 1950s in the bands of Rudy Salvini , John Coppola / Chuck Travis and Gerald Wilson and worked with the Vernon Alley quartet , with whom he accompanied Billie Holiday in 1955 . He then belonged to Benny Carter's band and from 1958 to 1961 the Red Norvo quintet , accompanied Frank Sinatra on several tours and Benny Goodman on his tour of the Soviet Union in 1962 , seen in the documentary Jazz for the Russians - To Russia with Jazz (2011). From 1965 to 1979 he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , he also worked a. a. with Oliver Nelson , Herbie Hancock , Duke Pearson , in the Count Basie Orchestra , Marian McPartland and Charles Mingus ( Let My Children Hear Music ). In the late 1980s he performed with Dizzy Gillespie and from 1992 to 2002 he was a member of The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band under Jon Faddis .
After numerous recordings as a sideman, he recorded his first album in 2003 with his own band The Joy of Sax (with saxophonists Frank Wess , Brad Leali , Dan Block and Jay Brandford , pianist Mike LeDonne , bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Joe Farnsworth ) as bandleader Jerry Dodgion and The Joy of Sax . In later years he worked in the bands of Anthony Wilson , Chuck Israels , David Berger , Gerald Wilson , Peter Lerner , Andy Farber and Ron Carter . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 388 recording sessions between 1954 and 2013, most recently with the Frank Perowsky Jazz Orchestra.
Jerry Dodgion was married to the drummer Dottie Dodgion (* 1929) for twenty years .
