Rudy Salvini

Rudolph "Rudy" Salvini (born March 22, 1925 in Oakland , † June 7, 2011 in Alameda (California) ) was an American jazz trumpeter , band leader and music teacher .

Live and act

Salvini started playing the trumpet in high school; he also collected records and bought stock arrangements. Soon afterwards he founded his own dance band. During his military service in World War II, he played in an Army Air Corps band ; on his return he studied at San Francisco State University , where he earned a Bachelor of Music (1951), then in Music Education (1953). He taught in the Pacifica School District until he retired in 1985. In 1954 he founded the Rudy Salvini Big Band , which performed at the first Monterey Jazz Festival in 1958 . In 1956 he presented his debut album Intro to Jazz (San Francisco Records). One of the most famous members of his band was the saxophonist Jerry Dodgion . In the following years Salvini also played with Dave Brubeck , Mel Tormé , Billy Eckstine , Earl Hines , Turk Murphy , Vince Guaraldi and Cal Tjader . With his various band projects he performed in the San Francisco Bay Area for fifty years , mostly in the Union Hall of San Francisco. Rudy Salvini remained active as a musician until shortly before his death at the age of 86, most recently with an octet and his six-piece dance band Tuxedo Junction .
