The Monterey Jazz Festival is held annually on the third weekend in September in Monterey , California . Founded in 1958 by James L. Lyons and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason , well-known jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie , Louis Armstrong , Charles Mingus ( Mingus at Monterey ) and Billie Holiday performed that year . Today it is one of the oldest jazz festivals. The central concert program is framed by workshops, exhibitions and panel discussions.

An important objective of the festival is to finance US- wide jazz funding programs. Every year the festival generates revenues in the six-digit dollar range with its supporting program.

Longstanding photographer of the festival since the 1970s was Ron Hudson (1940–2011), who became famous for his portraits.

According to a press release, the festival raised a total of $ 116,500 in funding for 2015.
