Dennis Irwin (born November 28, 1951 in Birmingham , Alabama , † March 10, 2008 ) was an American jazz bassist. According to Martin Kunzler , he "transferred gut string playing to modern bass style, perfected it and used the special response behavior of natural strings percussively for rhythmic intensification like no other bassist before him."

Live and act

Irwin, who started learning the clarinet at the age of nine, studied classical music at North Texas State University from 1969 to 1974 . During his studies he switched to the double bass and played in the university band "Two O'Clock Big Band".

At the beginning of his musical career he played with the pianist Red Garland in Dallas , then he moved to New York. There he worked with Charles Brackeen and Albert Dailey . In 1975 he became a member of Ted Curson's band . He also accompanied jazz singers such as Jackie Paris , Betty Carter , Annie Ross , Tania Maria and Mose Allison . From 1977 to 1980 he was a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers . The Jazz Messengers also recorded several of Irwin's compositions such as "Kamal".
