life and career
Jackson grew up in Tennessee in a household with his mother, aunt and grandparents. His aunt, Jackson reported in an interview with the FAZ in 2016 , was responsible for his becoming an actor: “She was a teacher and taught acting, among other things. Whenever she staged something, her boys were missing. So she came back to me. It was she who animated me to read, who taught me to dance, who made me memorize dialogues, who put me in strange costumes. I enjoyed it a lot. ”Still, he first studied marine biology at college until he took a public speaking course:“ The lecturer staged The Threepenny Opera and needed boys - and I've been doing it ever since. ”During his childhood, all his interests were in Music. He was a member of the school orchestra for a long time and originally wanted to be a trumpeter . However, he later switched to the theater company because his doctor had recommended acting as a cure for his stuttering .
Jackson attended Morehouse College in Atlanta . In the course of the civil rights movement and after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He was suspended for two years after he and some fellow students tried to force reforms to the school curriculum and held members of the Board of Trustees hostage on campus. He belonged to the Black Power organization . After graduating in theater studies in 1972, he could be seen a short time later in the plays Home , The District Line and Mother Courage and Her Children, among others. His film debut in Together for Days was followed by short appearances in Miloš Forman's Ragtime , Uncle Tom's Hut , The Prince of Zamunda with Eddie Murphy and Do the Right Thing by and with Spike Lee , with whom he worked a total of four times. He later admitted that he had major drug problems during this time . He has been clean since a stay in a rehab clinic in 1991.
In the early 1990s, Jackson played supporting roles in Good Fellas and The Hour of the Patriots with Harrison Ford . With roles in the Lethal Weapon - parody Loaded Weapon 1 and Jurassic Park , he drew attention to himself. In 1993 he starred in True Romance , whose script was written by Quentin Tarantino , a dealer who was shot at the beginning. Tarantino cast him a year later for his cult film Pulp Fiction . His portrayal of the killer Jules helped Jackson achieve his breakthrough at the age of 46 and after more than 20 years in the business and earned him, among other things, a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actor . Jackson has since been one of the actors Tarantino has worked with repeatedly. He played leading and supporting roles in Jackie Brown , Kill Bill - Volume 2 , Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight and appeared as a narrator in Inglourious Basterds .
In 1995, Jackson was Bruce Willis ' partner in Die Hard Now , a year later in The Jury with Sandra Bullock and Deadly Christmas with Geena Davis . In the late 1990s he took on roles in Tarantino's Jackie Brown with Robert De Niro , Sphere with Dustin Hoffman , Deep Blue Sea with LL Cool J and Negotiating with Kevin Spacey . One of his greatest dreams came true when he was offered a role in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace by George Lucas in 1997 . A year earlier, he had expressed this wish on the British talk show TFI Friday . His character Mace Windu is one of the central characters in the Star Wars prequel trilogy . He played an important role as a violin expert in the film drama The Red Violin (1998), which won an Oscar for the original music by John Corigliano .
In the comic adaptations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , Jackson played the role of SHIELD leader Nick Fury in several films since 2008 and in the television series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD .
He also appeared in the film Jumper in the role of Paladin Roland . He also voiced the superhero Frozone in The Incredibles and in 2004 the character of Officer Frank Tenpenny in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas .
Jackson has been married to fellow actress LaTanya Richardson since 1980 . Their daughter Zoe Jackson works as a TV producer of cooking and baking programs (including Top Chef, Sugar Rush ).
