Spider-Man: Far From Home is an American science fiction - action film by Jon Watts , the American US and on 2 July 2019 two days later came to German cinemas. It is a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming from 2017, as well as Avengers: Endgame from the same year. The film is produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and is the 23rd film and the second solo film of the title character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ).

action

Nick Fury and Maria Hill go to the small town of Ixtenco in Mexico, whose residents have reported about an energetic cyclone that is said to have worn a face and destroyed a lot here. They are joined by an unknown person who helps them fight the creature.

Meanwhile, New York City is starting the new school year at Midtown Technical High School. Eight months have now passed since the so-called "Blip" with which the Avengers brought back the people , which made Thanos' fatal finger snap five years earlier. The students are now reunited, but those who have been brought back have not grown older. When a school trip to Europe is scheduled, Peter Parker plans to confess his love to his classmate MJ there. He thinks the Eiffel Tower is a suitable place. Aunt May, who by now knows of Peter's superhero existence, presents Spider-Man to the press, but questions about the Avengers overwhelm the teenager. Peter wants to use the trip to Europe to take care of things that have nothing to do with his existence as a superhero and decides to leave his suits behind. Not everything goes as planned on the plane when Brad is allowed to sit next to MJ, who also has an eye on his classmate, during the flight. However, his best friend Ned unexpectedly gets closer to Betty during the flight.

After landing in Venice and moving along the city's waterways, a giant water monster appears. The unknown person from the beginning of the film appears again and together with Peter she fights against the creature that threatens to destroy the most beautiful buildings in the city. You manage to defeat the monster. In the small hotel on the water, where Peter's class was staying, he receives an unexpected visit from Nick Fury. The latter hands him Tony Stark's glasses, which are intended for his successor. It is equipped with the artificial intelligence EDITH, which has access to all Stark Industries databases and enables control of all security systems. Nick Fury also introduces him to the agents Maria Hill and Dimitri, but also the unknown person who is introduced as Quentin Beck, who is now called "Mysterio" by the people after his mission against the water monster. It also comes from planet earth, but from another dimension of the multiverse. He tells Peter about the " Elementals " who destroyed his world and wiped out his family. He has so far been able to destroy three of these, which now threaten the earth, only one fire monster remains to be defeated, whose appearance in Prague is suspected.

During an evening stroll on Charles Bridge in Prague , Peter confesses to his classmate MJ that he is Spider-Man

Since Peter does not want to help SHIELD fight the fire monster in order to continue enjoying his school trip , Nick Fury takes control of the further course of events by rerouting the school trip to Prague. Dimitri picks up the students and chauffeurs them through Austria to the Czech Republic. The annual Festival of Lights is currently taking place in Prague. Since Peter wants to keep his classmates away from the threat expected there, he guides them into a four-hour performance of an opera. Here he has to leave MJ alone with Brad to support Mysterio in the fight against the fire elemental. Beck, daring to die, rushes at the creature and destroys it. Back at the hotel, Peter's classmates tell him that the next destination on their trip is now Berlin . During an evening stroll on Charles Bridge , he confesses to MJ to be Spider-Man, which MJ had suspected for a long time. A piece of a holographic projector she found on the street after the last fight, which she shows him, leads Peter to suspect that he was betrayed by Beck and that the Elementals are just illusions he generated. In the meantime, however, he has already given him control of EDITH, because he saw Beck as the predestined successor to his former mentor Tony Stark. Beck turns out to be a former partner of Tony Stark, who invented the SENF technology and henceforth tries to present himself with the help of other former employees of Stark as the new superhero and protector of the earth.

In Berlin, Peter visits Nick Fury at Europol, but he has to realize that everything he experiences in Berlin is also just an illusion created by Beck using Stark's MUSTARD technology. Thus, Peter has previously revealed to Beck that MJ and Ned also know of his intentions, whereupon these are also declared to be goals by Beck. Thrown in front of a train by Beck, Peter wakes up in the Netherlands, where Happy Hogan picks him up and takes him to London by plane . Peter wants to break Beck's illusion there and regain control of EDITH. In a fight on Tower Bridge , Beck is finally shot himself by one of the drones he controls.

In the mid-credit scene, the DailyBugle editor J. Jonah Jameson accuses Spider-Man of being responsible for the Elementals' attacks. He also broadcasts fake footage of the incident that was manipulated to portray Parker as the killer of Beck and to expose him as Spider-Man. The post-credit scene shows the Skrulls Talos and Soren, who had been pretending to be Fury and Hill the entire time on the instructions of the real Nick Fury. Nick Fury was on a Skrull spaceship, which he also commands, during the incident.

production

Staff and cast

Tom Holland took on the role of Spider-Man again in the film

As in the previous film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, it was directed by Jon Watts . This had grossed 880.2 million US dollars worldwide, making it the 6th most successful films of 2017 . Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers also returned as screenwriters. Furthermore, Marvel is said to have tried to engage Adam McKay , who should help with the development of the film. McKay was very interested, but declined because of other projects.

The main role of Peter Parker alias Spider-Man was cast again with Tom Holland . In the film, he is said to wear a total of four different suits, including one that Nick Fury gave him personally so that he can evade the public. Jake Gyllenhaal is supposed to play the villain Mysterio, who, according to director Jon Watts, has a friendly relationship with Spider-Man and is supposed to be a "cool uncle" for him. In the comics, however, the trained stuntman was a villain who wanted to use illusions and tricks to create the impression that he was a hero. He mostly worked alone, but sometimes also joined the Sinister Six . In order to consolidate the relationship to the MCU in the film, influences from Iron Man , Thor and Black Panther were incorporated into his suit . By concept artist Ryan Meinerding also runes elements, mystical signs and engraved faces had been added, was combined so that the machine-dominated modern with antique elements. The spherical helmet typical of Mysterio , however, should have been animated with the help of CGI , since comparable spheres of the correct size would have weighed up to five kilograms. According to the scriptwriters, Mysterio was a Skrull in early script drafts . When both thought about the entertaining ways to fool the audience, it was ultimately decided to turn Mysterio into a con artist .

In July 2018, it was announced that JB Smoove had received a leading role in the film. Also Numan Acar is on the cast list and takes over the role of Dimitri , a member of the Task Force of Nick Fury . In early August 2018, it was confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders are part of the cast. According to Tom Holland, a funny dynamic should develop between Fury and Spider-Man due to their contradictions. In September 2018, a set video from the filming in London, which also features Jackson and Smulders, announced the return of Jon Favreau . In the theatrical version, JK Simmons can also be seen as J. Jonah Jameson . He already embodied this role in the films Spider-Man , Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 by Sam Raimi . Kevin Feige commented on Simmons' cast that Simmons had already announced a few years ago that he would like to appear in other Spider-Man films. It wouldn't have worked in Spider-Man: Homecoming , but since Spider-Man: Far From Home is largely set outside of New York City , it was thought this was the perfect opportunity to "do a variety of things." He went on to say that J. Jonah Jameson had been “turned into one of those contemporary left and right-wing journalists who stand screaming in front of the camera”, because a newspaper seller did not fit into the modern world. The Vulture and Scorpion from the predecessor, embodied by Michael Keaton and Michael Mando , who were initially expected as opponents , ultimately do not appear in the film. Watts justified this with the fact that they had not found a moment where both would have fit into the story, and that they did not want to appear in an unnecessary cameo . Instead, an appearance by Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson alias Falcon is said to have been briefly discussed at the end of the film. Ultimately, however, the decision was made against this plan in order to put the focus back on the fact that Peter Parker was the only available superhero. They also considered having Donald Glover appear again as Aaron Davis , but rejected this idea because they didn't want to spend too much time in New York City.

Filming and film music

The Venice film set , the first destination on Peter Parker's school trip

Filming began on July 2, 2018 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in Hertfordshire , a region north of London . There they built, among other things, sets for a bombed-out Mexican town, a burnt-out bar in Prague and an overturned bell tower in Venice. For the Italian setting, a complete section of the lagoon city including the fish market, cafes, shops, ornate houses and gondolas was reconstructed on a large water tank. Filming was later continued directly in London, including near Tower Bridge . At the beginning of September it was also announced that they wanted to shoot in the Czech Republic as well . In addition to Prague , where filming began in mid-September 2018, the film was also shot in Liberec for 21 days as a “Prague set”, which enabled the city to earn around 1.17 million euros that flowed into the city's economy. The first set photos were also taken from there, which finally confirmed Gyllenhaal's involvement in the film. At the beginning of October further recordings were made in Venice . Originally, the production team was not advised to shoot in the Italian city, as the ban on cars could lead to logistical problems with the equipment. Finally, the film was shot in New York City for a few days until the shooting finally ended on October 16, 2018. Because of the many locations, Watts described the film as a kind of "action travel film", which in some places should be visually reminiscent of The Bourne identity and feel like a James Bond film.

In October 2018 it was announced that Michael Giacchino would be responsible for the film music. He started composing the score on April 24, 2019 . The soundtrack, which includes a total of 25 pieces of music, was released on the day of the US theatrical release by Sony Classical as a download and a little later on CD.

Marketing and Publishing

In June 2018, lead actor Tom Holland revealed the title of the film with Spider-Man: Far From Home . On August 22, 2018, Sony presented the official logo for the film. On December 8, 2018, visitors to the Comic Con Experience in Brazil got to see an exclusive trailer and the performance of Jake Gyllenhaal . On January 15th, the first trailer, which set a new studio record for Sony with 130 million cross-platform views within 24 hours , was presented along with the official poster. At the end of March, three more posters were published showing Spider-Man in locations in Berlin , Venice and London . With the release of the second trailer on May 6, 2019, it was revealed that the film will take place after Avengers: Endgame , which had previously been the subject of much speculation. In the first 24 hours after publication, this trailer received 135 million views across all platforms, surpassing the studio record of the first trailer.

The world premiere took place on June 26, 2019 at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. On July 2, 2019, the film was released in the US and two days later in German cinemas. The cinema release in China took place on June 28, 2019.

The scenes cut from the film, most of which deal with Peter Parker's preparations for the European trip, are to be published digitally and on Blu-ray as a separate short film called “Peter's To-Do List” .

On August 29, 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home was released in a new cut in the US and Canada. This contains seven minutes of previously unreleased scenes.

In the United States, the film has been available digitally since September 17 and is due to be released on DVD , Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray on October 1, 2019 . In Germany, a digital release is scheduled for November 1st and a release on DVD, Blu-ray and UHD-Blu-ray for November 14th, 2019.

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12, but is allowed from the age of 6 when accompanied by parents. The statement of reasons for the release states that the film features a lot of turbulent action and fight scenes, but that the main character, who is extremely youthful, is a positive figure to identify with.

Reviews

The first votes after the abolition of the press embargo were mostly positive. Above all, the portrayal of Gyllenhaal, the good mix of action, humor and twists and the handling of the end of Avengers: Endgame and the associated death of Tony Stark were praised. In addition, the film would have captured the “spirit of the comics” well. One point of criticism was that the emotional development of the main character is pushed into the background, although Holland embodies the title hero charmingly.

The film convinced 91 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.5 out of a possible 10 points. In addition, the film came second in the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Comic Book Movies 2019 .

Stephanie Zacharek of Time Magazine says the entertaining film focuses on everything that is most attractive about Peter Parker and his alter ego. This is mainly the fact that he has not yet outgrown his teenage years and has super powers that he cannot fully control. The film and the actors are so entertaining that it almost seems like a burden when Spider-Man: Far from Home fulfills its task of being a classic superhero film .

Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press writes that when Peter Parker swaps New York ferries from Coney Island and Staten Island for famous cities like Venice, Berlin, London and Prague in Spider-Man: Homecoming , it would be strangely exciting to see him Swinging over old bell towers instead of skyscrapers in Manhattan. Kennedy goes on to explain that the first half of Spider-Man: Far From Home could stand on its own as Parker tries to conquer MJ while battling giant monsters with a ragged group of superheroes. In the second half things get downright bizarre as the film shifts up a few gears and almost reminds of productions like Saved By the Bell and The Matrix .

Julia Haungs from SWR2 Kultur Info says, as a former dancer and gymnast, Tom Holland gives the title hero an absolutely convincing physique, and the shy, in love young man is also taken from him. As slowly as director Jon Watts puts on the first half of the film, as quickly as he creates the second, in which the young hero is largely left to his own devices, Haungs continues: “In routinely spectacular action scenes, viewers from half of Europe fly around the ears. The more interesting fight scenes, however, are those that dive into seemingly psychedelic fantasies. ”In these nightmarish sequences, the film weaves a dense network of illusions, according to Haungs:“ What is real, what is staging? What certainties can one hold on to in the age of fake news? ”In Spider-Man: Far From Home not even the superheroes are protected from him, and with this ambiguity the film draws a meta-level that brings it to a worthy conclusion the Avengers Infinity saga.

Classification in the MCU

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the sequel to both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Endgame . In addition, the film closes the Infinity saga and the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and acts as an epilogue to the saga or to Avengers: Endgame . The film critic Antje Wessels writes that in front of the backdrop of a blockbuster pumped full of effects, the creators succeeded in preparing the events emotionally, which says a lot about the huge void left by the events in Endgame .

Sequels

In July 2019, it was reported that Spider-Man: Far From Home would have to bring in at least one billion US dollars at the box office in order for the contract between Sony and Marvel Studios to be extended and the latter also for a third Spider-Man film creative Keep control, while Sony only has the distribution rights. Although he was able to achieve this grossing result at the end of July 2019, it was reported a month later that Marvel, under the direction of Kevin Feige, would no longer have control over Spider-Man and that it would no longer be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe . An industry insider said that Sony should have been ready to extend the original contract with old conditions, according to which Disney should receive 5% of all revenues, for future films. The “mouse company”, however, would have asked for all costs and income to be shared equally in the future and for the contract to be extended to other characters such as Venom , for which Sony owns the distribution rights. Since Sony did not want to agree to this, the collaboration was ended. The studio would also have worked on two sequels, in which Tom Holland would again take on the leading role and where Jon Watts would again take over the direction. A little later, Sony confirmed the separation, but pointed out that some representations in the media would not be true, the separation from Disney was going on and a future collaboration would be welcomed. A short time later, Sony Pictures boss Tony Vinciquerra stated that there would be no new negotiations for the time being. Director Watts held out the prospect of a possible sequel that Kraven the Hunter was a possible opponent.

At the end of September 2019, both sides finally announced that they had agreed on a new contract. This means that Marvel Studios, under the direction of Kevin Feige, will have creative control of a sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home , which will be produced again by Amy Pascal and will be released in US cinemas on December 17, 2021 . The contract also includes the fact that Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, will be allowed to appear in another Marvel film and that Disney will receive 25% of the income from cinema screenings in addition to the merchandise rights.

The second post-credit scene , in which Nick Fury is on a Skrull ship, could point to the organization "SWORD", which could become more prominent in the MCU in the future. SWORD is the intergalactic counterpart to SHIELD in the comics and protects the earth from cosmic threats.
