The film was released in German-speaking theaters on April 24, 2019 and in US cinemas two days later. It is the 22nd feature film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth Avengers film. It continues the plot of Avengers: Infinity War from the previous year and is the tenth and penultimate film of the so-called phase 3.

In July 2019, Avengers: Endgame became the world's most successful film by gross profit .

action

After the decimation by Thanos , Tony and Nebula are in the Guardians' ship, the Benatar, on their way back to Earth. Tony's injuries could be taken care of by Nebula, but after a few weeks the propulsion of the ship fails, they are drifting through space far from any civilization and the food supplies and oxygen are running out. With certain death in mind, Tony takes a farewell message for Pepper with his Iron Man helmet, but is saved a little later by Captain Marvel, who is sent from Earth. This brings the ship safely to the Avengers headquarters, where the emaciated Tony and Nebula are received by Pepper, Steve, Rhodey, Natasha, Thor, Rocket and Bruce. The relationship between Tony and Steve is still disturbed after their disagreement , which is why Tony separates himself from the others for the time being. The remaining Avengers and their allies decide to track down Thanos and use the Infinity Stones to undo his act. Via Nebula, who kept telling Thanos about his plans, they can find the Titan's current location. As it turns out, two days earlier an energy signature similar to that of the decimation of the universe had been discovered on the planet, from which Natasha concludes that Thanos had reinstated the Infinity Stones. Then the Avengers fly with the Benatar over a jump point to the abandoned planet of the titans, where they find Thanos completely exhausted and without the infinity stones. Together they can overwhelm him, but they have to discover that the energy signature is based on the destruction of the stones by Thanos two days earlier. When the Avengers realize that their plan has thus failed, Thanos is beheaded by Thor .

Five years later, the lives of the remaining Avengers have changed massively: Steve is the head of a self-help group in New York, Tony and Pepper are now the parents of their daughter Morgan, Bruce has combined his two forms and now owns the Hulk's body and brain of the ingenious scientist, and Thor, together with the surviving sir , including the Valkyrie, Korg and Miek, built “New Asgard” on earth, but became overweight due to his alcohol consumption and his idleness. At the same time , by a happy coincidence, Scott is freed from quantum space and appears in a completely alien world. Over time, he learns that many people have disappeared, but he can quickly find out that his daughter Cassie is still alive, but five years older. Afterwards he goes to the Avengers headquarters, where he meets Steve and Natasha. He reveals to them that the five years in quantum space were only five hours for him and that there may be the opportunity to travel through time. With this idea they go to Tony, but are turned away by him because he does not want to endanger the life he has built up with his family after the painful defeat. However, when Tony later does his own calculations, he realizes that the plan with quantum space could actually work. So he seeks out his former colleagues, who have meanwhile turned to Bruce, and together they do their first little time travel tests. The Avengers 'plan is to travel back in time, find the Infinity Stones that still exist there, transport them to the present and then undo Thanos' act. Tony, Steve, Scott and Bruce are supposed to capture the tesseract, the scepter and the time stone from New York in 2012 , Thor and Rocket the ether from Asgard in 2013 and Nebula and Rhodey the orb from Morag in 2014 . The soul stone on Vormir is to be fetched from Natasha and Clint. The latter has become a ronin on a quest for revenge in previous years after his entire family had crumbled to dust by Thanos' deed.

In New York in 2012, Tony, Steve, Scott and Bruce arrive in the battle between the Avengers and the Chitauri. Bruce is sent off by the others to fetch the time stone from the Sanctum Sanctorum. There he meets the elder who does not want to give him the stone at first because she has sworn an oath to protect it. When Bruce mentions, however, that Strange handed the stone over to Thanos without defending himself, she realizes that she too has to do this with Bruce, because Strange is never wrong and does nothing. In order not to change the flow of time too much, Bruce promises to bring back all the stones after the work is done. Steve, Tony and Scott try to get the scepter with the thought stone and the tesseract with the space stone in the Stark Tower. Loki had already been captured by the Avengers at the time and the two Infinity Stones were handed over to the SHIELD agents Jasper Sitwell and Brock Rumlow, who, as the Avengers who traveled back from the future know, secretly belong to HYDRA. For this reason, Steve also poses as a HYDRA supporter and thus comes to the scepter. But when Tony and Scott try to steal the suitcase with the tesseract, it comes to a confrontation with Alexander Pierce, whereby Loki with the tesseract disappears in the turmoil. While Scott is supposed to bring the scepter safely into the future, Tony and Steve go even further into the past together. At a SHIELD base in the 1970s, they can secure both the tesseract and the new Pym particles that are needed for time travel. Tony also meets his unsuspecting father, to whom he reveals how proud he is of his father in the future, and Steve sees Peggy Carter, whom he has to leave behind ignorant. Thor and Rocket reached Asgard in 2013 and can extract the ether from Jane Foster's body. Thor also meets his mother Frigga again and wants to save her too, but is prevented by her.

Meanwhile, Natasha and Clint reached the planet Vormir in 2014, where they met Red Skull. Like Thanos in the previous film, this reveals to them that they have to sacrifice a loved one in order to receive the stone in return. Both Natasha and Clint are determined to throw themselves off the cliff to their death. But when it comes to a fight, Natasha can defeat Clint and sacrifices herself for the soul stone. That same year on Morag, Nebula and Rhodey can reach the orb before Star-Lord. But thoughts of Nebula from the future and the then still hostile Nebula, who is also looking for the power stone, overlap, which means that the young Thanos learns that his plan will work in the future. While Rhodey can escape again via the quantum space with the orb, Nebula is captured and exchanged for the hostile nebula of the past, which is to infiltrate the Avengers in the future.

When all the Avengers, except Natasha, reappear at the headquarters, they put the collected Infinity Stones in a glove from Tony. Bruce, who believes he can survive the gamma rays from the stones because of his physiology, voluntarily puts on the glove that still injures him, snaps his fingers, and when Clint's wife calls Laura, the Avengers realize that they have succeeded to bring back all the life that Thanos wiped out. But Nebula has meanwhile brought the young Thanos, the Black Order and the Outriders over the quantum space into the present time, whereupon the Titan bombs and destroys the Avengers headquarters. When Thor, Tony and Steve face him, he can defeat the god of thunder and Iron Man. But Steve proves to be worthy, can raise the Mjölnir brought by Thor from Asgard and defy Thanos, who not only wants to repeat his deed, but also wants to erase all memories of it in order to make it irreversible. A little later, the Avengers, magicians, the armed forces of Wakanda, Aesir, Ravagers, Pepper equipped with a suit and other allies appear from portals five years ago and now brought back to dust. Gamora from the past, who was among Thanos' henchmen, also joins the Avengers in battle and witnesses the nebula of the present slay their hostile version of the past in order to save Gamora. In addition, Captain Marvel comes back from space and intervenes in the battle. Together they can defend Tony's glove with the Infinity Stones against Thanos' army. Strange advises Tony that this is the only possible way to fix the world again. In the fight Tony outwits Thanos, swaps the glove for that of his suit, now carries the stones himself and snaps his fingers, whereupon Thanos and his followers crumble to dust. Subsequently, Tony succumbs to his injuries from the radiation of the combined stones in the face of Pepper, Peter and Rhodey.

A little later, Tony is buried with great sympathy from many companions. Clint and Scott are reunited with their families, Thor hands over Asgard's throne to the Valkyrie and then joins the Guardians. Steve is tasked with bringing the Infinity Stones and Mjölnir back to their places as promised, so that no parallel timelines can arise. He decides to stay with Peggy Carter, who once promised him a dance , but later shows up again as an old man with his colleagues and hands his shield to Sam.

At the end of the credits only the sound of a hammer hitting metal can be heard .

Production history

In October 2014, Marvel announced the plans for "Phase 3" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of an event . This included an announcement for two Avengers films that were to be released in April 2018 and 2019 and were to be titled Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II . Even before the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and the start of filming their film The First Avenger: Civil War , Joe and Anthony Russo signed as directors for the two-parter, succeeding Joss Whedon . He had announced his resignation due to creative differences with Marvel during the filming of Avengers: Age of Ultron and admitted in an interview at the end of July 2018 that he never knew what to do with Thanos, who was planned as an opponent for both films should. The Russos later stated that after Endgame there were currently no plans for further Marvel films to be behind the camera. Both left it open, however, not to return to the director's chair in the future. Feige said of the directors that for him they were courageous visionaries who were not afraid of crossing borders and at the same time meeting and undermining the audience's expectations.

Although it was announced that the films thus simultaneously back-to-back should be rotated, was Kevin Feige care not to be seen as two parts of a story, but rather as two stand-alone plants. So the end of July 2016 were the old title Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II rejected, the third part simply Avengers: Infinity War until the publication of the actual title only and the fourth part Untitled Avengers movie was its name . The Russo brothers justified this with the fact that the two films are completely different and that the titles show too much togetherness. When asked about the differences between the two films, Joe Russo said that Endgame will definitely have a unique tonality and be told from a different perspective than its predecessor. In April 2017, Feige stated that the title was too big a spoiler for Avengers: Infinity War , which is why it will only be announced after its release. He later regretted this secrecy because there was too much hype about the title and the fans ultimately had too high expectations of him. After many suspicions arose, in late May 2018 it was announced that the title had been Infinity Gauntlet for a very long time during production . Finally, Feige said the final title would be revealed in late 2018. That's how the film was named with the release of the first trailer in Avengers: Endgame in early December 2018 . According to Feige, this title was fixed before the film was developed. Also in December 2018, Joe Russo stated, “It is very likely that the film is about three hours. It's a big film with a lot of action. ”In February 2019, the Russos confirmed that the then three-hour cut had already been shown four times to a test audience. Despite this running time, there will be no break, which Feige justified with the fact that they are not a fan of "tedious film lengths" and that the film in its current version is the perfect length because it is very entertaining.

Writing process

In May 2015, Marvel announced that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely would be writing the Avengers two-parter. Feige said: "Chris and Steve have been an integral part of the Marvel family since the first days of Phase One, and their work speaks for itself." Both writers said they started doing it while filming The First Avenger: Civil War to capture various evolutions of characters that they would like to see in future films.

According to the directors, the end of the film was already fixed in the early stages of development, so that one would have a precise goal in the development of the plot. The scriptwriters also set the times for Thano's fingertips and the return of the heroes in the early stages of development , so that they could concentrate fully on the original Avengers in Endgame . Furthermore, both the death of Stark and the removal of the shield and the dance with Peggy Carter on the part of Steve Rogers should never have been up for debate. In the further development of the plot, both made sure to focus on the core of the story and leave out less important subplots. When asked what to do with the almighty Thanos , Executive Producer Trinh Tran found the answer to simply kill him because his mission had been accomplished. The subsequent five-year time jump should be staged in such a way that it evokes similar reactions from the audience as the time jumps in Fargo and Lost . In an interview, Christopher McFeely also revealed why Hawkeye does not appear in Infinity War : the story of leaving his family behind to go into battle was already told in Civil War . But after the end of Infinity War you would have had much stronger and new stories ready for him.

After the worldwide publication, the screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke about the first drafts of the script and ideas for action. It was clear to them early on that both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers would survive the Infinity War , because Endgame wanted to concentrate more on the original Avengers, which is why the Black Panther and Captain Marvel , which were very successful with their solo films , came a little shorter . Captain America's role in Infinity War would have been deliberately small, as he became the main actor in the sequel. The opposite happened to the Guardians of the Galaxy , which should be more in focus in the predecessor. According to the two authors, the big topic of time travel was the idea of producer Kevin Feige . While watching different films like Back to the Future , both would have found that the time travel there is physically incorrectly represented and developed their own version. Markus and McFeely wanted to prevent the trip to New York City in 2012 "because it felt too much like fan service", and instead wanted locations such as Asgard, an underwater Morag or the SHIELD headquarters "Triskelion" in the Set focus. In Asgard, Tony Stark was originally supposed to meet Heimdall in an invisible Iron Man suit and fight against him. Thor should go through the development of Hawkeye in the first versions and go on a campaign of revenge, which was later rejected by the authors, as this was too similar to his story in Infinity War . Furthermore, Bruce Banner was originally supposed to merge his two bodies in the predecessor. The final fight should also be made much more complex, for example with a 3-minute debate between the title heroes about how to proceed. Markus and McFeely also considered whether Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer in their suits and the Defenders should take part in the fight, but this was discarded due to the already existing mass of heroes. Sharon Carter continued to be in a relationship with Steve in early drafts , but Feige prevented her from appearing because it would not have suited the end of the film with Peggy Carter . In addition, both authors revealed that actually Hawkeye , whose family disappeared in the first script versions at the end of Infinity War , was supposed to die instead of Black Widow , but the producer for visual effects Jen Underdahl resisted. For Natasha Romanoff , the directors initially planned to care for orphaned children in Washington, DC . Even the well-known sentence “I am Iron Man”, which Tony Stark says at the end of the film, was not originally in the script. In the editing room, however, the Russos would have noticed that there was no suitable answer from Stark at this point . Finally, the editor Jeffrey Ford came up with the sentence, which also connects to the end of the first Iron Man film. Robert Downey Jr. is said to have initially been less than enthusiastic about having to step in front of the camera again, but was ultimately convinced by Joel Silver .

In the final version of the script, which appeared after the cinema release for the evaluation of the film prizes, the phrase "shut up" is included in three scenes, which however does not appear in the film. In the first scene with Rocket, it was replaced with a short sentence while the other two are silent. The sequence of scenes in the script is also different than in the film.

occupation

After Robert Downey Jr. signed an early contract for The First Avenger: Civil War and the two Avengers films, Chris Evans was also signed for the fourth part, in which the story arc of Captain America is completed, after his contract was actually signed had ended with Avengers: Infinity War , but Marvel was able to convince him of the plans of the two-parter. For his appearance in the two-parter, he is said to have collected a total of between 15 and 20 million US dollars. Chris Hemsworth also confirmed in an interview in April 2015 that his contract included three films, including the fourth Avengers film. For the two-parter he received a fee similar to Evans. Since Thor is overweight in Endgame and the filming of both films partly took place at the same time, Hemsworth had to wear a 40-kilogram fat suit including weights on his hands and feet, which put a lot of physical strain on him. Originally Thor should have regained his athletic stature during the course of the film, but Hemsworth campaigned for the new experience to be carried through the entire film. To do this, he sat in the mask for up to three hours a day.

In July 2016, Brie Larson was cast as Captain Marvel , who will make her second appearance after her solo film, which started two months earlier . The filming of the film took place before that of her solo film. Therefore, their external appearance is slightly changed, since according to Joe Russo the actors can choose their own make-up and hairstyle and Larson later made other optical decisions. Later in October, Evangeline Lilly announced in an interview that Hope van Dyne, embodied by her, would not appear in Avengers: Infinity War , but in Avengers 4 , as they wanted to save her further development for Ant-Man and the Wasp . In the same month, Jeremy Renner announced his appearance in the two-parter, but ultimately did not appear in Avengers: Infinity War . By Kevin Feige the participation of was Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland confirmed.

Just before filming for Avengers: Infinity War began , Karen Gillan announced that she would make a small appearance in the next two Avengers films. After filming Avengers: Infinity War ended , Josh Brolin and Dave Bautista confirmed their return for the fourth Avengers film. The return of Scarlett Johansson , Chadwick Boseman , Paul Rudd , Letitia Wright , Sean Gunn and Terry Notary , as well as Tom Hiddleston was also announced through set photos . In the same way, a participation by Gwyneth Paltrow became public, which also confirmed that Don Cheadle is part of the cast.

Sebastian Stan's contribution became public through an interview in September 2017 . He later stated that he had shot scenes with Samuel L. Jackson , Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer . In October 2017, Mark Ruffalo published the plans for his character Hulk in an interview . There he says that his ideas about a Hulk film were taken and distributed on Thor: Decision Day and the two Avengers films, so that a small "Hulk trilogy" was created. With the announcement in December of the same year that Elizabeth Olsen had shot her scenes, her appearance and shortly before that of Anthony Mackie became known. Also, Chris Pratt , Zoe Saldana and Pom Klementieff are in Avengers 4 happen again. Shortly before the global release of Avengers: Infinity War in April 2018, Jon Favreau confirmed that he will appear in the fourth Avengers film. Even Benedict Wong , Tessa Thompson , Winston Duke , Frank Grillo and Tilda Swinton will make an appearance again. Ty Simpkins also takes on his role as Harley Keener from Iron Man 3 . The newcomers to the film are Hiroyuki Sanada as the Japanese yakuza boss Akihiko and Ken Jeong in a cameo as a security guard in a warehouse. Ava and Lia Russo , the daughters of director Joe Russo, play Lila Barton (Ava), the daughter of Hawkeye , and a Hulk fan (Lia) in the film. The inventor of the cartoon character Thanos , Jim Starlin , can be seen and heard in the self-help group. Originally it was also reported that Katherine Langford would star in the film. In the theatrical version, however, she does not appear. She played the role of the adult Morgan Stark at the end of the film.

It was only with the release of the film that various actors who had already appeared in previous MCU films became known. These include Linda Cardellini , Marisa Tomei , Rene Russo , Taika Waititi , Angela Bassett , Cobie Smulders , Hayley Atwell , Maximiliano Hernández and Ross Marquand . The last time Robert Redford appeared on the big screen was Endgame . Unused footage from Thor - The Dark Kingdom was used for Jane Foster's appearance . Natalie Portman only had to re-set a small scene in which she speaks from a distance. Furthermore, Howard the Duck and Sean Gunn have little cameos as Kraglin Obfonteri in the final battle . Stan Lee can be seen one last time in a Marvel movie after his death in November 2018.

Filming and post production

The original plan was to shoot back-to-back with that of Avengers: Infinity War , with the actors moving back and forth between the films. Later, however, it was decided to shoot the two films separately, which Kevin Feige justified with the fact that the already difficult planning was simply too complicated. The biggest problem for the directors was that over 90% of the film had already been shot by the time Infinity War was released, and they missed the important audience reactions to the previous film. So they should have focused on their first visions of what scenes should look like later, but according to Chris Evans they were very cooperative with the actors. The first recordings took place during the production of Avengers: Infinity War in the United Kingdom . After filming the predecessor ended on July 14, 2017, it was relocated to St. Abbs , a small fishing village on the south coast of Scotland, for Endgame . Later recordings were made in Durham and the Durham Cathedral located there , which according to the directors is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe. Due to their size, only a few special effects would have had to be used in post-production. The production designer Charles Wood also improved the appearance of the building with new walls and structures, whereby he did not want to clutter the rooms, but to calm them down. His work was so good that even employees of the cathedral did not recognize what was original and what was added.

Finally, on August 10, filming began at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta , which served as the production base for the film, under the working title of Mary Lou 2 . In mid-August the film was shot in Tokyo for two days . Furthermore, the film set of a Japanese city center was used for recordings on the set in Atlanta. On these sets, Hiroyuki Sanada filmed his scenes as Akihiko . The Russos were especially looking for an actor who had both martial arts and sword fighting skills so that he could keep up with the other stunt people. Sanada ended up doing ten one-minute takes full of choreography, sometimes in the rain or at midnight, and according to the Russos, he got better and better. The New York City film set was also recreated from the first Avengers film for new recordings. Further recordings were made in downtown Atlanta. On January 11th, the shooting ended, which together with that of Avengers: Infinity War amounted to almost a year and over 200 days of shooting. In June 2018, the film was shot for two days in Dutchess County , including the Hudson River , and one day in Ulster County . Further re-shoots have been announced in Atlanta and New York City. These began at the beginning of September 2018 and, according to Mark Ruffalo, were rather the rest of the main shooting, as they could not have completed the film in full the year before. On October 13, 2018, Anthony and Joe Russo announced the end of post-shooting. Further recordings were made in January 2019. Mark Ruffalo later commented on the shooting, in order to maintain secrecy, the directors had only given the cast incomplete scripts, which even contained false scenes. In addition, she would have twisted several ends so that even the actors would not know which was the right one. According to the Russos, only Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans got anywhere near complete scripts, while Tom Holland didn't even know who he was talking to for many scenes.

Like its predecessor, the film was shot entirely with IMAX cameras. For the film was Monique Ganderton promoted to stunt coordinator, as the stunt coordinator of Infinity War , Sam Hargrave in Endgame as a second-unit director acted. On the film set, the whole crew was thrilled to see the calm and concentrated Ganderton in this position. She herself is proud to pave the way for other women in this profession.

Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt acted as editors , who described the two-year work, during which they had been under constant pressure, as very intensive. As early as the beginning of 2017, parallel to the filming, they started cutting the two-parter, whereby they would have determined in the editing room which scenes should be re-shot and which should be refined or finished. This would have meant a continuous process of pre-production, production and post-production at the same time for over a year. When filming was finally completed in early 2018, Ford and Schmidt had to go through a four-month "absolutely hellish, almost impossible post-production" for Infinity War , which they described as the most intense period of their careers. While Ford was still working on Infinity War , Schmidt was already collecting the material for Endgame so that the Russos could see the cut scenes while the film was being made. Just one and a half weeks after the main shooting was over, both of them could have completed a first version of Endgame . In total, the raw material for both films would have been over 900 hours. In March 2019, the directors announced that the final cut had been completed.

A total of 14 VFX companies, including Cantina Creative and Perception , were responsible for the visual effects under the direction of VFX supervisor Dan DeLeeuw . Of the 2698 shots in the film, a total of 2496 had to be digitally post-processed. Nevertheless, one tried to implement as many effects as possible in practice. For example, the rat that Ant-Man liberates from quantum space is a real trained animal. The New Zealand company Weta Digital , headed by VFX supervisor Matt Aitken , who was also responsible for the effects of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy , was mainly responsible for the almost 20-minute final battle . The team used both techniques and software that were already used in The Lord of the Rings . The "gigantic battle sequences" and large masses were simulated with the help of the now significantly further developed computer program Massive , whereby great importance was attached to diversity. So an attempt was made to incorporate the fighting styles of different groups, such as magicians, Wakandans, Asgardians, Chitauri or Outriders, into the confrontations and not just to let “everyone against everyone” fight. These techniques were also used in the final battle in Infinity War . Weta Digital also worked with Digital Domain under the direction of VFX Supervisor Kelly Port on the animation of Thanos and used their own new software to add even more details to his face. The first test recordings with Josh Brolin were made back in 2016 to find out whether his animation could carry two films. The company Industrial Light & Magic , led by VFX supervisor Russell Earl was with the animation of the Smart Hulk commissioned. Great importance was attached to combining the right proportions of Bruce Banner and the Hulk with each other. For this purpose, Mark Ruffalo's body scans were created, hand animations were made and his face was analyzed using facial capture . The 2496 VFX shots included around 200 aging and de-aging shots (aging effects). Lola applied these visual effects to Michael Douglas , John Slattery and the Avengers from 2012, among others . Chris Evans was aged 5% with makeup and 95% with CGI at the end of the film, according to the directors . Official making-of videos also revealed that Captain Marvel's hair and Captain America's helmet were digitally inserted. The Captain Marvel costume and the heroes' time travel suits also had to be digitally inserted, as the final designs had not yet been developed at the time of filming.

Marketing and Publishing

The first trailer was released on December 7, 2018, along with the title reveal. In the first 24 hours after its release, the trailer recorded 289 million views across platforms, breaking the record for Avengers: Infinity War , which had around 230 million views a year earlier in the same time. The Endgame trailer also broke the record with 549,000 mentions on Twitter within 24 hours, which was previously also set by Avengers: Infinity War with 389,000 mentions. A short TV commercial was released during Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019 . The second trailer for the film was released along with the poster on March 14, 2019 and received 268 million views within 24 hours. At the CinemaCon in Las Vegas at the beginning of April, around five minutes of new film material was shown without the directors themselves knowing about it. Overall, the film's marketing cost is said to be over $ 200 million, which is a new record for Marvel Studios . In addition, you have more global advertising partners than ever before. The world premiere took place on April 22, 2019 in Los Angeles . The film was released in German-language cinemas on April 24 and in US cinemas on April 26, 2019. In North America it is expected to be shown in a total of 4,662 theaters, which would mean a new record. Twelve cinemas in selected cities are showing a 22-film marathon, starting on Tuesday morning. In addition, it should be seen in a total of 1,400 IMAX cinemas worldwide .

Unlike the other MCU films, Avengers: Endgame has neither a mid- nor post-credit scene . After the credits, only the sound of a hammer hitting metal can be heard. This is a reference to the first Iron Man film, when Tony Stark built his first Iron Man suit in captivity . The Russos justified their decision to leave out a real post-credit scene by saying that the focus should be on commemorating the past and the past journey of the titular heroes and not on the future.

On June 28, 2019, the film was re-released in US cinemas with new scenes not included in the original theatrical version. However, this is not a typical Extended Version , but only seven minutes after the credits, which consist of a tribute to Stan Lee , an incomplete scene with the Hulk and a preview of Spider-Man: Far From Home . In Germany, too, this version was shown in 150 cinemas across the country from June 27th.

The film has been available digitally since August 23, 2019. It was also released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 5, 2019 . As a result, Avengers: Endgame became the best-selling Blu-ray in the first three quarters of 2019.

Presale records and box office forecasts

According to initial estimates, thanks to a timely release on the Chinese film market, the film will gross up to 840 million US dollars worldwide on the opening weekend. For North America, revenue is expected to be up to $ 265 million in the first few days. The global forecast was later increased up to $ 950 million. After strong Thursday previews , the forecasts for North America were revised up to 315 to 330 million US dollars on the first weekend and 140 to 150 million on the first day alone. A first indication of these numbers was the start of ticket sales on April 2, 2019. On several ticket sites, including Fandango and AMC , there were sometimes major restrictions on the purchase of tickets. Atom Tickets reported that within the first hour three times as many tickets were sold through their site as for Avengers: Infinity War the year before. At Fandango, Endgame broke the Star Wars record : The Force Awakens the best-selling cinema tickets on launch day in just six hours, and Regal also sold twice as many tickets within eight hours as for Infinity War in the entire first week. He was also able to clearly surpass the numbers of Infinity War , with Endgame, for example, already being able to sell more tickets after an hour than its predecessor on the entire start day. Cinema tickets for the very first screenings in Chinese metropolises could cost up to US $ 150, which means that advance sales alone brought in US $ 114.5 million. According to forecasts, between 250 and 280 million and a total of up to 530 million US dollars will be generated in China in the first few days. Advance sales were also very successful in other countries. The British cinema chain Vue Entertainment reported a 400% increase in advance sales compared to Infinity War . In addition, over 175 midnight performances are said to have sold out across the country. Furthermore, over a million movie tickets were sold in India on the first day and several ticket sites crashed in South Korea after the movie tickets became available.
