John Slattery (born August 13, 1962 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American film and stage actor .

Life

John Slattery is the fifth of six siblings. He grew up in Boston and received his bachelor's degree from the Catholic University of America in 1984 .

Slattery then moved to Hollywood , where he got his first film role in the short-lived television series Dirty Dozen: The Series four years later, in 1988 . In the 1990s, Slattery was hired for some well-known feature films such as Sleepers and Eraser . He has also appeared on television series such as Sex and the City , Just In Case, Amy, and Will & Grace . From 2004 to 2005 he worked in the short-lived family series Jack & Bobby as Peter Benedict . The role of advertising agency co-owner and bon vivant Roger Sterling in the award-winning 1960s series Mad Men earned him Emmy nominations in 2008 and 2009 .

In addition to his work in front of the camera, Slattery has also appeared on the theater stage since 1989 and made his Broadway debut in 1993 in Neil Simon's play Laughter on the 23rd Floor . Slattery is also politically active and a member of the Democratic Party .

Since December 30, 1998 Slattery is married to the film actress Talia Balsam , with whom he has a son. His in-laws are Joyce Van Patten and the late Martin Balsam , both also actors.
