overview

Ted Danson plays the title role of Dr. John Becker, a cynical, disgruntled doctor with his own practice in the Bronx . About half of the series takes place in the practice, where Becker has to deal with his employees and patients, the other half in a coffee shop where Becker meets his friends. Every now and then the action takes place in places like Becker's apartment and other locations, for example in the subway.

In season 1 episode 20 (Taxi to Queens) there is a crossover with the series Everyone loves Raymond , Cosby and King of Queens , whose respective main characters Ray Barone ( Ray Romano ), Hilton Lucas ( Bill Cosby ) and Doug Heffernan ( Kevin James ) you can see. Through further crossovers as part of the series mentioned, Becker is part of a common series universe of Everyone loves Raymond , Cosby , Love must be crazy , The Nanny , King of Queens and Sara's exciting country life as well as the feature film This Is Spinal Tap .

characters

Dr. John Becker

Ted Danson plays Dr. John Becker

Dr. John Becker is played by Ted Danson, who is best known from the sitcom Cheers . Becker is not in a good mood. He has a special ability to see the worst in everything and is a notorious grumbler in society. His attempts to single-handedly take action against the system are almost always doomed to failure - yet he tries again at every opportunity. Dr. Becker was the best in his class at the American elite university Harvard and is now in his mid-forties a general practitioner with a shabby practice - a professional dead end compared to the highly paid specialists in the USA. He's also divorced for the second time. The way Becker treats his fellow human beings can at best be described as “not exactly nice”. This also often prevents him from finding a new partner. An exception to this is Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Carson, played by Frances Fisher , with whom he entered into a relationship over a comparatively long period of time, but this love affair does not last too long either. However, if a patient or a friend has a serious problem, they can be relied on, even if it puts them back personally. Of course, that doesn't stop him from ranting loudly about the need for his help.

Reggie

Reggie dropped out of college years ago in favor of a modeling career and is now running his coffee shop after the untimely death of her father. Reggie eventually tries to get a college degree in psychology at night school when she is in her early thirties . At the same time, she is looking for a stable relationship, but is unsuccessful. Reggie leaves the series at the end of the fourth season. She is played by the actress Terry Farrell , known from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , among others .

Jake

Jake is portrayed by Alex Désert . He is Becker's best friend and runs a newspaper stand in the coffee shop. Jake has been blind since an accident five years before the action began. Actor Alex Désert is not blind in real life.

Margret

Margret, played by Hattie Winston , is John's chief doctor's assistant and also takes care of him - but rarely acts particularly lovingly, but rather with a motherly resolute attitude. Besides work, her main occupation is her difficult marriage to her husband Louis. Louis is one of the television characters who are mentioned more often, but are never seen in the picture.

Linda

Shawnee Smith plays Linda

Linda, played by Shawnee Smith , is also a nurse at Becker's office. The young woman's work ethic leaves a lot to be desired - in the few hours she even appears in the practice. Most of Linda's daily routine is spent planning her various amorous adventures. Linda's last name is never mentioned throughout the series.

bob

Bob, played by Saverio Guerra , only appears sporadically at first. He was in the same high school as Reggie and now makes fun of their shabby life. But then his own life also falls apart: his wife leaves him, he loses his business. Later he is Becker's caretaker and usually hangs out in the coffee shop with Jake and Reggie. Bob always speaks of himself in the third person. He always tries to make ends meet with minimal effort; in one episode, for example, he pretended to be a blind beggar in order to earn money. As of season six, Bob will no longer appear because, according to Jake, he was going on vacation. The actor Saverio Guerra decided not to renew his contract after the fifth season.

Chris

Chris, played by Nancy Travis , was initially Becker's neighbor from the end of season four, who mainly annoyed him with her exaggerated happiness. After Reggie's departure, Chris took over her coffee shop. Because Becker first decided on Reggie and then on Chris, the relationship between the two was marked by tension for a long time. They eventually become a couple at the beginning of season six.

Hector

Hector is played by Jorge Garcia and will succeed Bob from the sixth season. He, too, tries to get through life with as little effort as possible - he usually forges the associated plans while sitting in the coffee shop.
