Frances Fisher (born May 11, 1952 in Milford-on-the-Sea , Hampshire ) is a British - American theater and film actress . One of her best-known roles is that of Ruth DeWitt-Bukater in the hit film Titanic .

life and career

Her father worked on the construction of oil refineries so she was forced to move often when she was young. On average, she moved once a year until she was in 7th grade. After that, her family stayed in Orange , Texas . She began acting at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia. Fisher studied with Stella Adler .

She spent 14 years mainly in New York, where she starred in over 30 plays by authors such as John Arden , Noël Coward , Emily Mann , Eugene O'Neill , Joe Orton , Sam Shepard , William Shakespeare , Jean Claude Van Italie , Eudora Welty and Tennessee Williams .

She won a Drama Desk Award for her role in the American premiere of Caryl Churchill's Three More Sleepless Nights and also starred in the first performance of Judith Thompson's The Crackwalker in the United States. Furthermore, she played roles in The Chain of Elia Kazan and Arthur Miller 's last play Finishing the Picture . In addition, there were roles in well-known plays such as 1984 after George Orwell and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo .

Frances Fisher became known to a worldwide audience for her role as Ruth DeWitt Bukater, the mother of Rose, in the disaster film Titanic by James Cameron . In 2006, she returned to the theater stage in the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles back and played there in The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov .

Fisher was married to Billy Mack Hamilton from 1970 to 1972. In 1993 their daughter Francesca Fisher-Eastwood was born, whose father is the actor and director Clint Eastwood .

Frances Fisher was originally slated for the role of Jill in Listen, Who's That Hammering . However, the audience reacted negatively to Fisher while she was making the pilot. Observers described her portrayal as tearful and desperate. Then she was replaced by Patricia Richardson .

Fisher made several guest appearances in the second season of the series Becker and played the girlfriend of the series hero Ted Danson.
