In the Heat of the Night (original title: In the Heat of the Night ) is an American television series , of which a total of 146 episodes of 45 minutes each were created between 1988 and 1994. The series is based on the feature film of the same name from 1967.

The setting is the fictional small town of Sparta in Mississippi . There are two very different personalities responsible for combating crime: the grumpy police chief Gillespie and the detective in charge, Virgil Tibbs, who previously worked in Philadelphia. But Gillespie's experience and Tibbs' modern techniques make them an unbeatable duo. A variety of issues are addressed in the episode, including racism, substance abuse, AIDS, rape, incest and corruption.
