Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid (born July 25, 1955 in Mogadishu , Italian Trust Territory Somalia , now Somalia ), better known only by her first name Iman , is a Somali model and actress .

Life

The daughter of a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia and a gynecologist has two brothers and two sisters. As a child she escaped the fate of female circumcision through a trick by her parents . She grew up speaking five languages ​​and studied political science at the University of Nairobi after graduating from high school in Egypt . There she was discovered on campus by the well-known photographer Peter Beard .

She got her first job as a model in 1976 for the American edition of Vogue magazine . She was immediately very successful and worked for many fashion designers, including Yves Saint Laurent , Versace , Calvin Klein and Donna Karan . During her 14 years as a photo model, she also worked with well-known photographers such as Helmut Newton , Richard Avedon , Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz .

Iman has starred in Miami Vice , Out of Africa , Dangerous Triangle , Heart of Darkness , LA Story , The Human Factor, and No Way Out .
