Louise Fletcher (born July 22, 1934 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American actress . She played her best-known roles as Kai Winn in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and as the tyrannical head sister in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , for the latter role she was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress .

life and career

Fletcher was born to deaf parents Robert and Estelle Fletcher, so she was taught to speak by a hearing aunt who introduced her to acting. After graduating from the University of North Carolina , she moved to Los Angeles , California , where she worked as a secretary during the day and took acting classes in the evening. Appearances in various television productions followed until she married in 1960 and needed time for her family.

In 1974 Louise Fletcher returned to film in Robert Altman's Thieves Like Us . Miloš Forman saw her and cast her for the role of the tyrannical head nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , the film adaptation of Ken Kesey 's novel of the same name . For this role she received an Oscar for Best Actress and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama . The American Film Institute names her character, Sister Ratched, number five on the list of the 100 Best Film Villains of All Time. Fletcher has also appeared in films such as The Narrow Gauge Sniffer , Exorcist II - The Heretic (1977), The Fire Devil , Project Brainstorm (1983), Invasion of Mars , Flowers of the Night, and Natural Enemies (with Peter Armstrong and Hal Holbrook ).

She was nominated for an Emmy for her recurring role in the television series Picket Fences . She also had a continuous role in the science fiction series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Kai Winn , the religious leader of the Bajorans . In 2011 and 2012 she played an ex-prisoner in the US series Shameless .

Louise Fletcher was married to producer Jerry Bick from 1960 until her divorce in 1978 and has two sons from this marriage. She caused a sensation when, after her divorce, she had an affair with the more than 25 years younger and then 21 year old Morgan Mason, the son of actor James Mason .
