High School High is an American comedy film of Hart Bochner from the year 1996 . It was produced by David Zucker, among others .
action
Teacher Richard Clark is employed at the seedy Marion Barry High School in downtown Los Angeles . The young people there are considered difficult to educate; the teaching staff is demotivated. Clark was already booed during his inaugural speech. The school principal Evelyn Doyle thinks that the school should only “store” these “criminals” until they “can be released into the public or sent to a real prison”. But Clark’s unshakable optimism cannot harm all the adversities of his first day of class.
When Clark denied entry to a gang from outside at the school festival in the evening, there was almost a fight. Clark separates Paco, the leader of the gang, from his self-confident student Griff, who is new to Nat, an ex-date of Paco. Clark agrees to a car race between the two - without knowing what it is exactly. Only Victoria Chapell, administrative assistant to the director, explains: Two young people are driving one car each towards a ravine. Whoever jumps out of the car last wins. When Chapell informs Clark, he takes their car and tries to stop the young people - but his car is wedged between the other two vehicles. While the opponents jump off in time, Clark can only save himself by releasing the convertible roof, which then functions as a paraglider. From now on he is respected at the school.
Chapell is attacked at school by the masked Paco, who tries to intimidate Clark. Clark saves her. He and Chapell admit their affection and have sex with each other.
Clark has a plan to motivate Griff to study, which he believes will affect everyone else in his class. He convinces him to make something of himself. Students study intensively and prepare for the six-week academic performance test for college . At the same time, with the help of all the students, the neglected school complex is transformed into a model facility.
The night after the exams, Paco exchanges the tests in the school vault. The principal announces the result: Clark's class was the worst in the country. Clark is fired by Doyle, and the students give up in resignation.
A student reports a rumor that Paco reversed the tests. In order to clear up the background and to prevent the job-seeker from becoming a member of Paco's gang, Clark and Chapell seek Paco on the alleged order of the drug dealer DeMarco. Doyle, alias Mister A, is exposed as the boss of Paco's gang and head of a drug ring.
In a fight with Griff and his friends, the gangsters are overwhelmed. The students in the class use question-and-answer games to show the headmistress that they are not stupid. Doyle is arrested by the police, Clark is their successor.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that he was longing for other David Zucker comedies like The Incredible Journey in a Crazy Plane and The Naked Gun , which were at least consistently funny, which cannot be said about this film. Jon Lovitz is not able to play a leading role. The best are the portrayals by Natasha Gregson Wagner, Tia Carrere and Louise Fletcher. The attempt to parody such films as Dangerous Minds was unsuccessful.
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the film had two flaws: it wasn't very funny and the story was taken seriously. Tia Carrere seems "adorable".
backgrounds
