Tia Carrere [ kəˈɹeə ] (born January 2, 1967 in Kalihi , Hawaii ; real name Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo ) is an American actress , model and singer and multiple Grammy award winner. She became known for roles in the movies Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2 and the adventure television series Relic Hunter .

Childhood and personal life

Carrere was born in 1967 as Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo in Kalihi , a district of Honolulu on the island of Oahu . Carrere is of Spanish , Chinese, and Filipino descent. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a singer and took singing lessons from the age of eleven.

When she was twelve, her parents and two sisters moved to Samoa for professional reasons , Carrere stayed with her grandmother in Honolulu. After her parents divorced, her mother and sisters returned three years later.

In 1984 she adopted the stage name Tia Carrere. Tia is an abbreviation of her actual first name Althea, while she borrowed the surname Carrere from the actress Barbara Carrera .

In 1985 Carrere took part in the Star Search talent competition, but dropped out in the first round.

Shortly after she was discovered as an actress and got her first film role, she moved to Los Angeles to hold a Screen Actors Guild membership card . There she worked as a model for several months, including for Harper's Bazaar and Cosmopolitan .

In 1992, People Magazine listed her as the 50 Most Beautiful People. In 1995 and 2001, the US magazine FHM counted her among the "100 sexiest women". In 2002 she posed naked for photographer Phillip Dixon for a photo series for Playboy . The pictures were printed in the January 2003 issue, the cover of which they also graced. In December 2006, this photo series appeared in the German edition of Playboy .

On November 22, 1992, she married the Italian-Lebanese producer Elie Samaha . The marriage was divorced in February 2000. On December 31, 2002, Carrere married a second time, this time the British photojournalist Simon Wakelin. Their daughter was born on September 25, 2005. Carrere filed for divorce in April 2010. The marriage was divorced in August of the same year. Both share custody of their daughter.

Carrere currently lives in Los Angeles.

Acting career

Carrere was discovered by the parents of the film producer Mike Greco at the age of 17 in a supermarket in Waikiki . He was enthusiastic about her and so she got the role of Lani in the film Aloha Summer produced by Greco .

In 1985 she got a role in the soap opera General Hospital , in which she played from 1985 to 1987. During this time she also made a guest appearance on the action series The A-Team . This performance should have turned into a permanent role, but her obligations at General Hospital prevented this. Her role was then dropped after one episode and never reappeared.

She had other series appearances in Airwolf , MacGyver , Back to the Past , A Terribly Kind Family , Tales from the Crypt, and NAM Service in Vietnam .

She became known to a wide audience in 1992 for her role as rock singer "Cassandra Wong" in the hit comedy Wayne's World , which she embodied in the sequel Wayne's World 2 the following year . As a trained singer, Carrere took over all the vocal pieces in the films herself and was also featured on the film soundtrack with three songs.

Her appearance in Wayne's World was followed by several roles in major productions, for example The Cradle of the Sun (1993), True Lies (1994), Gunpower (1995) and High School High (1996). She also acted in several films by her then husband Elie Samaha ; however, these were not very successful.

In 1995 she took on one of the leading roles in the interactive CD-ROM game The Daedalus Encounter .

From 1999 to 2002 she played archeology professor Sydney Fox in Relic Hunter , an action-adventure series based on the Indiana Jones films and Tomb Raider games. A total of three seasons of the series were produced.

In addition to her acting career, Carrere is also a singer and has released several albums.

Carrere grew up in a very musical family. At the age of 14 she sang in a jazz orchestra in her high school . There she met Daniel Ho , with whom she would later win a Grammy together . They formed a band that covered songs by Black Sabbath and AC / DC , with Carrere as the lead singer. Together with Ho, she performed at various events in Hawaii.

She also owes her musical talent for her role in the comedy film Wayne's World , with which she achieved her breakthrough as an actress. After meeting Michael Ostin, President of Warner Bros. Records , he recommended her to the film's casting director, who was looking for an Asian rock singer for the role. In this film, she now had the opportunity to show her musical skills and took over the vocal parts of the film herself. She also contributed three songs to the soundtrack of the film, which was later awarded double platinum . The single Ballroom Blitz was released as a single release in several countries, including Germany and Great Britain.

In 1993, she released her first solo album, Dream , which the Philippines with platinum was excellent. Also in 1993 she was represented with the song I never even told you on the soundtrack of the cartoon Batman: Mask of the Phantasm .

Several years passed before she returned to music. Together with her childhood friend Daniel Ho, she recorded her second album, which was released in North America in June 2007. She stayed true to her homeland under the title "Hawaiiana" and was nominated at the 2008 Grammy Awards in the "Best Hawaiian Music Album" category. The album Ikena , which was produced together with Daniel Ho and won a Grammy the following year, soon followed . In 2010 she was nominated again together with Ho for her album He Nani . In 2011 she was awarded a Grammy in the category "Best Hawaiian Music Album" for the album Huana Ke Aloha .

Carrere is also active as a voice actress for cartoons and series. In 2002 Carrere successfully voiced the character Nani in the animated film Lilo & Stitch . After the success of the film, Carrere Nani also lent her voice in the direct-to-DVD sequels Stitch & Co. - The film (2003), Lilo & Stitch 2 - Stitch completely crazy (2005) and Leroy & Stitch (2006) in six episodes of the animated series Lilo & Stitch (2003-2006) and the video game Disney's Stitch: Experiment 626 (2002). Speaking roles in several other cartoon series followed. In 2006 she also voiced the character Lin in the computer game Saints Row .

In 2006 she took part in the dance show Dancing with the Stars on the ABC channel together with the dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy . In 2009, she co-hosted a pre-event for the 51st Grammy Awards with Wayne Brady , which was streamed on Grammy.com .

The German edition of Playboy magazine dedicated the front page to Carrere and a series of photos in the December 2006 issue.
