The film opened in German cinemas on August 18, 1994.

action

Harry Tasker and his wife Helen, together with their pubescent daughter Dana, lead a seemingly normal family life: Harry works as a sales representative for computers and travels a lot; Helen works as a paralegal and housewife .

In reality, however, Harry is a top agent for a federal counter-terrorism organization called the Omega Sector, which insists on maintaining such strict secrecy that not even his wife knows what he is doing. Harry is currently working on the prosecution of the art dealer Juno Skinner, who is being paid by an Arab terrorist organization to smuggle several nuclear warheads from the holdings of the former Soviet Union inside ancient statues into the country in order to be able to threaten the United States. Although Harry has already worked hard on the terrorist organization, its leader Salim Abu Aziz manages to escape him.

Meanwhile, Helen feels so neglected by Harry's frequent absence that she is looking for adventure and gets involved in recruiting the alleged secret agent Simon, who is actually a used car dealer and only uses his secret agent scam to make it easier to approach women can. Harry uses the resources of his organization to shadow the alleged agent and his wife. When Simon tries to seduce Helen in his motor home , Harry intervenes with a task force and kidnaps them both. He gives Simon a lesson and lets him go. He interrogates Helen anonymously about her motives and learns that she still loves him, but that she lacks variety and excitement in her life. In order to offer her the desired adventure, he organizes a deception maneuver. With the announcement that she could save herself a stay in prison, he asked Helen to put a bug in the hotel room of an alleged arms dealer . Helen's appearance as a prostitute in the alleged arms dealer, who Harry embodies himself, is abruptly interrupted by the terrorists who break into the room and kidnap both of them to an island in the Florida Keys .

The terrorists find out Helen's inept utterance that she is Harry's wife, and Harry, under the influence of a truth serum , reveals that he is a spy . After Helen was able to process the information about her husband's double life, Harry frees himself and Helen, whereby both find each other again. They watch Aziz arm one of the nuclear warheads in a warehouse on the island and set it in concrete. Harry attacks the terrorists, killing many of them, but Helen falls into Skinner's hands. While Aziz makes his way to Miami with another warhead in the helicopter , where he wants to detonate it as a show of force, Helen is kidnapped by the other terrorists in a convoy on the Overseas Highway towards the mainland. Harry's colleagues arrive on the island by helicopter . Since the bomb in concrete cannot be defused, they have to leave the island and pursue the terrorists. Military aircraft summoned from a nearby maneuver destroy the bridge in front of the terrorist trucks, killing most of their convoy and Juno Skinner; Harry manages at the last moment from the helicopter to save his wife from the driverless car. A short time later, the atomic bomb detonated on the island at a sufficiently great distance.

Meanwhile, Aziz and the rest of his men reach Miami, take Harry's daughter Dana hostage and hide themselves in a skyscraper with the last warhead. Harry “borrows” a Harrier whiz to pursue. Meanwhile, Dana manages to get the ignition key of the bomb, escapes to the roof of the skyscraper and on to a construction crane, followed by Aziz. Shortly before Dana is about to fall to her death, her father hovers with the Harrier under her and catches her. Aziz also jumps on the Harrier and fights with Harry, slipping off the fuselage and getting stuck on an air-to-air missile from the Harrier, which Harry fires at the terrorists' helicopter, eliminating Aziz and the rest of his gang.

Some time later. Helen has since been accepted as an active agent at "Omega Sector". This measure cemented her marriage to Harry, because the two now work together as steady partners. On their latest assignment, they meet the used car dealer Simon again, who cannot give up his scam, and teach him a healing lesson.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives 71% positive reviews for the film and it has a Metascore of 63 out of 100 on Metacritic .

The author Jack Shaheen expressed in a 2001 published analysis of over 900 Hollywood films (book Reel Bad Arabs : How Hollywood Vilifies a People ) regarding the use of anti-Arab clichés, the thesis that True Lies belong to the "worst" top five.

“An action film made with tremendous effort, which wants to make fun of the genre and its effects, which it succeeds especially with a James Bond parody and a technically adventurous perfect ending that is exaggerated into the absurd. In between there is just as much routine as idling, and above all a lot of superfluous brutalities, which countless cliché terrorists fall victim to. The play of the main actress, who makes the change to an adventurer believable and ironically undermines the sexist game of the male (agent) world with subtle details, is excellent. "

“... wherever the director James Cameron, who is known as a tinkerer and flayer, allows a deeper look into his film, a black hole opens up. [...] Basically he is no better as a director than Frankenstein. He gets his beings to run, hardly to life. [...] If a man who dreams of a world is denounced as a pants-shit, and another, whose world is killing, also wins back his wife, although he has not learned anything, then that only proves that Hollywood is Dream factory has had its day. There is a picture in the midst of the turmoil, where you can look into the soul of the film: the woman drops the submachine gun from the hand, rolls over down a flight of stairs, and the shots that are released from the gun do at least as much Opponents like Arnold himself. The runaway weapon that can replace anyone is the true heart of this film, a soulless pacemaker. "

“As always in the crazy action race against himself, the later 'Avatar' director Cameron showed here for the first time that he can also do comedies. Conclusion: Casual, funny, loud: Arnie in top form "

continuation

A sequel to the film was originally planned, but this was put on hold for an indefinite period as Arnold Schwarzenegger focused on his campaign for governor in California and was unable to take on any other leading roles after the victory.
