Michael Althen

Michael Althen (born October 14, 1962 in Munich ; † May 12, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German film critic .

Life

Althen has been writing film reviews for various publications since he was eighteen. After graduating from high school in Unterhaching in 1980 , he began to study German and journalism in Munich. Since 1984 he has been a freelancer for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , but also wrote for Spiegel , Die Zeit , Tempo and other magazines. Since 1998 he has been the film editor in charge of the Süddeutsche Zeitung as the successor to the late Peter Buchka . In 2001 he switched to the feature section of the FAZ as an editor and moved with his family from Munich to Berlin.

In 1995 Althen shot the documentary Das Kino bittet zu Tisch - Essen im Film for WDR , for which he received his first Adolf Grimme Prize in 1996 . He received another Grimme Prize in 1998 for his film essay The Whispers in the Mountain of Things about Graf's father, the actor Robert Graf , which he produced in collaboration with the director Dominik Graf . He also made a filmic declaration of love for his hometown with Graf in 2000 ( Munich - Secrets of a City ) . In 2008, the documentary Eye to Eye - A German Film History premiered at the Berlinale , which he directed together with Hans Helmut Prinzler .

Michael Althen was married and had two children. He died of cancer in May 2011 at the age of 48. His grave is in the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße in Berlin-Westend (grave location: 16-C-9/10).

In May 2012 the FAZ donated the annual Michael Althen Prize for Criticism in Althen's honor .

A cinematic homage to Althen with the title What is the end of here? The film critic Michael Althen premiered on February 13, 2015 in the Forum of the Berlinale. Dominik Graf's documentary opened in theaters on June 18, 2015.
