Tobias Kniebe (* 1968 in Stuttgart ) is a German journalist and film critic .

Life

Kniebe is a graduate of the German School of Journalism and studied journalism, philosophy and political science at the University of Munich . As a freelance writer with a focus on film, he worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Jetzt Magazin , Spiegel , Focus , Bavarian TV , Südwestfunk , and various other media, among others .

In 2002 and 2003 he was part of the development team that invented NEON magazine for the Gruner + Jahr publishing house . He coined the slogan "We should actually grow up", with which NEON was launched and marketed, and was a NEON author until 2007.

Kniebe attended various scriptwriting seminars, including at the University of Southern California with Frank Daniel . He directed the TV documentary "Deutschland im Kinorausch" for Bayerischer Rundfunk and was co-author of the feature film Fremder Freund .

From 2005 to 2009 Kniebe wrote the column The Principle for the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . He subjected everyday phenomena to a philosophical and humorous analysis, often with surprising results - for example, that cell phone ring tones are the new punk rock. In September 2007 a collection of 100 columns appeared in the book Das Prinzip in the Süddeutsche Zeitung Edition (with Andreas Bernard).

Kniebe has headed the film department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung since January 2008, after having worked there as a freelance film critic for fifteen years.

In January 2009 Kniebe published the historical non-fiction book Operation Walküre. The drama of July 20th published by Rowohlt Berlin Verlag. In it he describes the secret plan of the military resistance against Hitler, from the first bomb that Henning von Tresckow had smuggled into Hitler's plane, to the failed suicide bombing in the Berlin armory, to Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and the coup on July 20, 1944 . The presentation is based on extensive research and interviews with the last witnesses of the resistance, including Ewald Heinrich von Kleist , Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager and two sons of the assassin Stauffenberg. "A tape that was actually missing," said Der Tagesspiegel .

Together with Alexander Gorkow , Kniebe won the German Reporter Award 2010 (best cultural report) for the text "Junge Number One", a portrait of the filmmaker Klaus Lemke .
