The magazine Neon (own spelling: NEON ) was a line extension of the magazine Stern from the publishing house Gruner + Jahr . It was published monthly from June 23, 2003 to June 18, 2018 as a print edition and until December 31, 2019 as an online publication under the Stern.de umbrella .

The main target group were people between 20 and 35 years of age. The magazine was subtitled We Should Be Growing Up until 2006 and covered topics such as relationships , careers , politics , travel , fashion , society , pop culture, and psychology . Several of the sections in neon included regular columns , including by Tillmann Prüfer and Theresa Bäuerlein . There was also the internship column by the writer Michael Ebmeyer . Until the May 2006 issue, Heike Makatsch wrote the column on the topic of buying . Then she was replaced by Christian Ulmen for two issues .

Users could write their own articles on the magazine's website. The editorial team included some in the print magazine and regularly used pictures from members of the online community in the table of contents. In the Neon users have learned from life category, users were also able to actively participate in the design of the content.

Neon has existed in France since 2012 .

On April 18, 2018, the publishing house Gruner + Jahr announced that the print version of the magazine will be discontinued on June 18, 2018. After that, neon was only available in digital form. The reason for the discontinuation was the recently massively reduced circulation. The digital edition was also discontinued on December 31, 2019.

Edition

The circulation sold initially rose from 118,628 copies in the fourth quarter of 2004 to 254,807 copies in the third quarter of 2011 and then fell to 64,415 copies in the first quarter of 2018.

Neon research grant

In 2008, Neon magazine sponsored investigative work once with a research grant for young journalists under 40 years of age. The award was given to "Exposés for topics or specific stories that have not yet been researched and written and that often cannot be realized without financial support." The jury included the two Neon editors-in-chief Timm Klotzek and Michael Ebert , as well as the Neon editors, Thomas Osterkorn and Andreas Petzold .

The five best ideas were each funded with 10,000 euros. The journalists funded initially offered their research results exclusively to Neon.

Fake interviews

In January 2010, the discovery of fake interviews that had been published by former Neon editor Ingo Mocek since 2004 caused a sensation . After internal research it turned out that he had partially or completely falsified some interviews and added quotes from archives to others. These included interviews with Christina Aguilera , Snoop Dogg , Robbie Williams and Jennifer Lopez . Neon ended the collaboration with Mocek.
