Coffs Harbor is a coastal city in the north of the Australian state of New South Wales . The city is located about 540 km north of Sydney , 400 km south of Brisbane and has 45,580 inhabitants. It is the administrative center and center of the local administrative area of Coffs Harbor City .
The area around Coffs Harbor is dominated by resorts and apartment complexes, surrounded by mountains, banana plantations and farms.
The name Coffs Harbor can be traced back to Captain John Korff , who named the area Korff's Harbor when he was looking for shelter from a storm in 1847.
Coffs Harbor is the hub of a thriving banana industry. One of the biggest attractions is the Big Banana , the largest banana in the world (made of concrete) as a symbol of the region's most famous export good, where you can learn more about banana cultivation. There is also a popular diving base in a small natural reef .
Other attractions include the Pet Porpoise Pool animal park (dolphin and seal show), the Historical Museum (pictures, tools and memorabilia from the pioneering days) and the botanical garden on the banks of Coffs Creek with plants from subtropical and temperate zones.
The city is home to the Coffs Harbor Education Campus , a partnership between Southern Cross University and Coffs Harbor Senior College.
There is a small marina to the east . There is a small airport in Coffs Harbor and an important main road ( Pacific Highway ) runs through the city from Sydney to Brisbane . The city can also be reached by rail on the Sydney-Brisbane mainline.
Sports
In 2001, the Australian national football team played four World Cup qualifiers in Coffs Harbor, including the game they won 31-0 against American Samoa on April 11, the highest international win of all time. The area in and around Coffs Harbor was chosen as the venue for the Rally Australia , which is part of the 2011 World Rally Championship .
