Russell Ira Crowe (born April 7, 1964 in Wellington ) is a New Zealand film actor , film director , film producer and musician living in Australia . The portrayal of the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius in the movie Gladiator , for which he received an Oscar in 2001 , made him known worldwide.

Youth and beginnings of the career
Russell Ira Crowe was born the younger of two brothers in Wellington, on the north of the two New Zealand islands. His father, John Alexander, is from Christchurch, his mother, Jocelyn, b.
