Jeffrey Warren "Jeff" Daniels (born February 19, 1955 in Athens , Georgia ) is an American actor .

biography

Daniels, who originally wanted to be a teacher, studied English and theater at Central Michigan University after leaving school . When director Marshall W. Mason staged two student productions at Eastern Michigan University in 1976 , Daniels also appeared for auditions and got leading roles in both plays. Mason was so impressed by his talent that he suggested he join the New York theater group Circle Repertory Company , which prompted Daniels to drop out of college. He was soon playing on Broadway and other New York theaters. He became known for his portrayal of Jed Jenkins in Fifth of July by Lanford Wilson , who had written the role for Daniels.

In 1981 he made his cinema debut in Miloš Forman's Ragtime . In 1983, in a time of tenderness , he delighted both critics and audiences. His collaboration with Woody Allen for the film The Purple Rose of Cairo in 1985 made a lasting impression on Daniels. Not only did he christen his own theater and production company Purple Rose , but he also adopted Allen's way of working.

Since 1990 he has been promoting young talents from the Midwest and helping them achieve bigger roles. His own plays Shoe Man , The Tropical Pickle , The Vast Difference and Escabana in da Moonlight earned him a lot of fame and numerous awards. In 1994 he achieved two of his greatest successes with the action film Speed and the crude comedy Dumm und Dümmer . In the following years he appeared in Amy and the Wild Geese , 101 Dalmatians , Blood Work , Pleasantville and The Hours, among others. In 2006 Daniels was nominated for the film comedy The Squid and the Whale for the Golden Globe as best actor (comedy / musical). From 2012 to 2014 he starred in the series The Newsroom , for which he received an Emmy in 2013 .

Daniels has been married to his high school lover Kathleen Rosemary Treado since 1979 . They have three children, born in 1984, 1987 and 1990.
