The focus of this (in a broader sense) coming-of-age film is self-centered man Jeffrey Manus ( Jon Heder ) and his character changes when his mother Jan Mannus ( Diane Keaton ) begins a romance with motivational speaker Mert Rosenbloom ( Jeff Daniels ). Through the feud with him as well as the tenderly budding relationship with the Indo-folk singer Nora Flannigan ( Anna Faris ), he develops courage and compassion.

29-year-old Jeffrey, believed to be maladjusted, lives with his widowed mother Jan. His father's death motivated him not to move out and instead to protect his mother. In fact, he behaves comparatively childish and demanding, which u. a. Includes packed lunches. He works in a second-hand bookshop and devotes a lot of time to video games and comic books. LARP duels are among his few other interactions . From his point of view, this little world is threatened when his mother becomes engaged to Mert Rosenbloom and he moves in with his fiancée. One of the first sacrifices Jeffrey has to make is the end of the usual mini-golf rounds that take place Friday evenings with his mother. To eliminate this problem, that is to say, to get Rosenbloom to move out again or to end the partnership, Jeffrey relies on the help of the singer Nora, who also works in a coffee shop. While the conflict with his mother's partner slowly escalates - this includes a. manipulated slides of a presentation, the buttocks exposed incisions in pants and hidden drugs - Jeffrey discovers - to his own surprise - his adult side.

Reviews

Rick Groen wrote in Globe and Mail that the film quickly fell to the level of a "grotesque romantic comedy" . The cast is strong, but the script is "leaden" and predictable.

Joe Leydon wrote in Variety magazine on December 3, 2007 that the film was "arbitrary" and "clumsily executed" . The comedy is "aggressively bizarre" , but "scratchy uncomfortable" . The end seems like a desperate attempt to redeem the "unsympathetic" main character, who has already lost the audience's interest. The portrayal of Jeff Daniels is "surprisingly engaging" . Diane Keaton could not do much with a character that did not make much sense dramatically or emotionally.

With #exclaim! * @ # , The film received a mixed rating with a tendency towards negative. It was difficult to develop positive feelings for the main character Mannus, even if he provokes a few laughs thanks to Jon Heder's play. In fact, the entire film also contains some entertaining moments, which can be attributed in particular to the improvisation skills of the talented cast. Still, the film also has a tendency to get a little slow and boring - especially when trying to advance the narrative and develop the characters.

For The News & Observer , Craig Lindsey states that it is a warning signal if the corresponding website for the film is loveless and only functions to a limited extent. Likewise, the production company Warner Brothers legitimately made every effort to keep the popularity as low as possible through as little advertising as possible. Otherwise, the film essentially tells an identical story to Mr. Woodcock , a recently released comedy film from 2007. Lindsey regards the involvement of Anna Faris as the only salvation, whose presence gives him the feeling that the film is worth his time.
