action

Kate, who is engaged to the vet Henry, is killed by the sculpture of an iron angel without wings on the day of her planned wedding and ends up in an in-between world after she immediately messed with a wingless angel in heaven. Henry is devastated after her death and desperately tries to get over the loss. After more than a year has passed, his sister Chloe persuades him to contact Ashley, who works as a medium . A first meeting of the two is not very promising, so Chloe gives Ashley Kate's diary so that she can at least pretend to be in contact with Kate. In fact, Henry and Ashley gradually get closer and eventually fall in love. What they don't know, however, is that Kate's ghost has returned to the world and is haunted there. When Kate reveals herself to Ashley, however, she believes that she has the extraordinary sensitivity of a medium. Kate makes it very clear to Ashley that she disapproves of a connection between her and her near-husband. On the other hand, Kate doesn't know why she was allowed to return to earth as a ghost. When she finds out that the creator of the ice sculpture is also dead and he tells her that she still has something important to do, she believes that the task is to protect Henry from harm. Since she is convinced that Ashley is not good for him, she does everything possible to break the two apart.

For this purpose she uses many of her newly discovered abilities that are available to her as a spirit, such as walking through walls, being able to levitate, letting objects move and so on. She even goes so far that she disturbs the couple during sex.

When Henry finds out that Ashley is in possession of Kate's diary, he believes she's been playing the wrong game all along and pulls away from her. Ashley then flees into the arms of what she believes is her gay friend Dan, with whom she also runs a catering business and lives together in an apartment. Dan now reveals to her that he was never gay, but only let her believe in order to be with her that he was in love with her.

Henry now again falls into a depression combined with feelings of guilt. When Kate meets the Iron Angel sculptor, Kate realizes that she wants Henry to be happy while he tells her that there is still an unfinished business ahead of him. Kate then assures Ashley that she will not put any more obstacles in the way of Henry and her and that she wants Ashley to make Henry happy. However, Ashley thinks this is another one of Kate's tricks. She tells Kate that she plans to go to Las Vegas with Dan. Ultimately, Kate managed to convince Ashley and some time later a happy Henry appeared with Ashley on the altar. Dan, in turn, teams up with Chloe.

Meanwhile, Kate tries a second time to go to heaven and this time, albeit reluctantly, is let in by the angel who now has wings.

criticism

The lexicon of international films drew the conclusion that this film was a "failed ghost comedy with predictable gags." The film developed its "characters only inadequately" and came up with "full of familiar clichés".

The critic Roger Ebert asked why no one got goose bumps in films with ghosts and why ghosts in films could always go through walls but never fall through the floor. The story goes as expected, even if the really important questions about life after death are not asked. It is also difficult to believe that Dan could have kept his revelation to himself for five years undiscovered. In short, the film doesn't take itself seriously.

The film critic James Berardinelli said that in order to create a lovable romantic comedy, you just need to follow a few simple rules: Find two likeable draft horses whose chemistry is right, give them a simple framework that enables them to meet so that the audience can share their love story want to pursue, and elements like wit and intelligence in the script. Jeff Lowell misses any of these commandments. The film is not terribly bad, but just as mediocre as a lot of films. One cannot even hate the film because it generates too few emotions for this kind of passion. Eva Longoria Parker's acting is not much better than how she looks in this film, Ruud looks like he would rather be elsewhere and Lake Hill acts with exaggerated gestures that make her character look more like a caricature.

Josh Rosenblatt of the Austin Chronicle had absolutely no interest in the film and wrote that he hoped and prayed that the audience would get up in hateful films like this and leave the theater to make it clear that they were asking for something new and fresh. But that never seems to happen. In the right hands it could have been something, just imagine what Rosalind Russell and Norma Shearer could have done with such roles, or Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, or even Salma Hayek and Reging King. Rosenblatt said wistfully that one should only imagine which dialogues Billy Wilder or the Coen brothers might have written.

Neil Smith of BBC Movies also found only negative words for the film, which an audience needs no more than an exorcist. The result of the effort is as funny as a funeral.

Carlo Dutto of Close up also joined the chorus of negative reviews , who stated that a comedy fails when it is simply not entertaining. The film is nothing more than a mere chance product, without a soul and without the slightest idea that sticks in the memory, and the story is kitschy. There was nothing that would not make this movie, which came along in a cheap, silly, gray dress, superfluous.

However, Nektarios Papaspyrou from Movies Matia had a different perception . He wrote that the film is probably one of the best of its kind and will make viewers laugh and also touch their romantic side in some scenes, especially towards the end. The actors' achievements were praised and the film was recommended for relaxed home theater evenings.

OutNow-CH then judged again like the majority of the critics, found the story “too lame, the actors are nice but irrelevant” and the joke seems to have “got lost somewhere between the bridal bouquet and the vet clinic”. Only about her corpse had become an "inconsequential and at times quite boring thing".

Eric D. Snider didn't totally piss the film off and wrote that there were enough laughs in the film to make it worth seeing despite Longoria's unbearable performance as a bitchy, defiant, dead fiancé. You should just ignore them, because Rudd and Bell are very charming together and both deserve top spots in a good film comedy.
