John Bailey (cinematographer)
John Bailey (born August 10, 1942 in Moberly , Missouri ) is an American cinematographer . In August 2017, he was surprisingly elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which is responsible for awarding the Oscars , among other things .
biography
John Bailey attended Loyola University in Chicago in 1962 . During his studies he visited Innsbruck and Vienna to learn the German language and culture. He then attended film school at the University of Southern California. His specialty was camera technology, in 1968 he graduated from the university.
He started his film career as a simple camera technician for a documentary about the musician Joe Cocker . Alan Rudolph , a student of Robert Altman , then engaged Bailey in his early works. Bailey became known as the chief cameraman of the hit movies A Man for Certain Hours and A Normal Family . He is particularly valued by the extravagant director Paul Schrader . Between 1991 and 2000, Bailey directed four films.
The member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) was appointed to the jury of the Venice International Film Festival in 1987. At the 1985 Cannes Film Festival , Bailey was honored with the Japanese costume designer Eiko Ishioka and the composer Philip Glass with the Best Artistic Contribution Award for the film Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters . In 2001 he also received the President's Award from the Society of Camera Operators.
Bailey asked Panavision about a special anamorphic wide-angle zoom. In 2006 the "AWZ2" was manufactured and was nicknamed the Bailey Zoom .
John Bailey has been married to Carol Littleton , a successful film editor who was nominated for an Oscar in 1983 and won an Emmy in 2000 , since 1972 .
