Gene Allen

Gene Allen (born June 17, 1918 in Los Angeles , † October 7, 2015 in Newport Beach , California ) was an American art director and production designer .

Life

Gene Allen showed drawing talent already at school. But as the son of a captain of the Los Angeles Police Department, he first went to the LA Police Academy, which gave him ideas for later scripts. He made countless small drawings, which he then brought to life sixty years later. With the beginning of the Second World War, he ended his career in the police force and joined the US Navy. He graduated from Carthay Center Grammar School, John Burroughs Junior High and Fairfax College. Then he went to Santa Monica to junior college, but only for a very short time. As a talented artist he worked in advertising agencies until he found his way to film and worked very successfully with director and film producer George Cukor .

He won the Oscar for Art Direction in 1964 . He headed the Art Directors Guild and was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1983 to 1985 .

He and his wife Iris have a son, Jon Patrick. Gene Allen died on October 7, 2015 at the age of 97 in Newport Beach, California.
